There are only a few Western spiritual traditions that recognise animals as fellow Soul travellers and treat them accordingly. I have a deep regard and affection for the Pythagorean tradition which viewed animals as brothers and sisters. For the time in which Pythagoras lived (around 570-500BC), he was a spiritual radical within Greek culture. He was a proficient animal communicator, vegetarian and was opposed to the rites of animal sacrifice that were so common throughout the pagan world. He also believed in the transmigration of souls; understanding that although souls incarnate into different types of bodies, they are still all souls. Eventually, like so many teachers and 'doer's of a different, more compassionate and gentle way of living, he was hounded out and killed. But... what a wonderful spiritual legacy he has left.
