Wound Management in Neurological Patients

This patient developed paw wounds due to neurological deficits affecting normal limb placement and sensation.

Through a combination of:
βœ… Therapeutic laser therapy to support healing and circulation
βœ… Appropriate wound dressings to protect the area and create an optimal healing environment
βœ… Correct topical treatments tailored to the stage of healing
βœ… Ongoing monitoring and management of the underlying neurological condition
..we achieved complete healing with healthy skin, fur regrowth, and normal nail regrowth. 🐾

Every wound is different, and successful management relies on selecting the right treatment at the right time. Early intervention can make a huge difference to both healing times and patient comfort.

A little Monarch update - today he had a rescan and his SDFT branch tear looks fully healed πŸ‘πŸ˜
He still has a thickened annular ligament which is now the priority to keep quiet as we increase his workload but hopefully this means we can get back to doing some fun things πŸ₯°πŸ˜

At one point, Molly would have tried to put you through a wall before letting me touch her neck πŸ˜…

Now she happily tolerates deep massage, fascial release, and light mobilisations 😍

A lot of Molly’s discomfort seems to localise around the intervertebral spaces. As a rescue, she’s naturally very flighty, and some recent vet visits appear to have caused a flare-up in her neck tension again (mainly her fear of needles). She also tends to fling her head around when stressed, which has likely further aggravated the area.

Despite this, Molly now very much enjoys her treatments, relaxing throughout sessions with no negative behaviours β€” a huge change from where she started ❀️

Storm was first seen at the end of 2024 following behavioural and ridden issues including bucking, throwing her rider off, biting and kicking. Her rider had understandably lost confidence and no longer wanted to ride her.

Assessment revealed significant muscular tension alongside a poorly fitting saddle contributing to discomfort, which was subsequently changed.

Storm initially struggled hugely with touch and handling, reacting defensively during treatment.

Fast forward to now, and Storm had her best appointment yet β€” tolerating treatment throughout with only minor reactions in her previously sore areas. Her little rider is confidently back on board and the pair are now happily jumping up to 80cm with no dramas πŸ’™

A lovely reminder that behaviour is often communication, and with the right management and rehabilitation, the transformation can be huge.

🐾 Toby’s story
Toby came to me with a mystery forelimb lameness affecting his comfort, mobility and ability to enjoy longer walks. Through a tailored rehabilitation plan including massage therapy, laser therapy and therapeutic ultrasound, we focused on reducing discomfort, improving tissue health and restoring function.

Alongside hands-on treatment, Toby worked through focused conditioning exercises to rebuild strength and stability. A huge part of his success also came from lifestyle changes β€” including stopping repetitive ball throwing β€” and achieving an incredible 5kg+ weight loss to reduce stress on his joints.

Fast forward to now… Toby has progressively worked back up to 7 mile walks with no lameness and is ready for his next adventure holidays in the Lakes πŸΆβ›°οΈ

A brilliant example of how rehabilitation, conditioning and lifestyle management can work together for long-term success πŸ’ͺ
