Rich and Lissie (assisted by vet student Lara) went out to remove this alpacas eye last week. This chap had an anterior luxating lens. The dislocated lens blocks fluid drainage in the eye which causes severe pressure (glaucoma), corneal swelling, and rapid blindness. With limited treatment options available it was decided enucleation was the best way forward in this case. He had the eye taken out undersedation and with a tonne of nerve blocks and was quickly up and about again

When we have a large group of calves to disbud and castrate we often ‘knock them down’. Knock down disbudding involves the calves being sedated prior to their horn buds being removed to prevent stress and make handling safer and easier. These Dexter calves had a lovely nap and woke up without their horn buds shortly after, none the wiser

Richard was out PDing our practice administrator, Molly’s, beef herd this week. It’s the time of year for our spring calving herds to get their cows scanned before winter.
Scanning allows us to identify cows that are in-calf, check how far they are in-calf, and identify empty cows early.

Knowing what’s in-calf means you can make informed decisions on culling, feeding and herd management well ahead of calving.

Get in touch with the practice to book your herd in for PDs.

As we approach tupping season it’s always worth getting your Rams checked out to allow replacements to be found. Ram Mot and fertility tests can allow issues to be found and prevent empty ewes. Call the office or email info@thelivestockclinic to book a visit or find out more
