14.10.2026 - Meet Sooty 🐴❤️ At 33 years old, he’s a wonderful example of how equines’ nutritional needs alter significantly as they get older.
Sooty has limited dentition, meaning that he can no longer chew long-fibre (ie., grass and hay). The main focus of his nutrition ration therefore, is ensuring that he receives the correct levels of fibre, as well as micro-nutrients (essential vitamins and minerals).
As horses age, taking a holistic view becomes even more important; Teeth, forage intake, weight, condition and overall health can all influence how we approach their total ration.
It’s not about simply feeding more – it’s about finding the right way to provide what a veteran horse needs, in the correct form. 💚
At 33, Sooty is doing brilliantly, and it’s a privilege to help support him in his golden years. 🥰

A little look at a recent appointment with this lovely miniature Shetland 🐴💚
I’ve been working with him for two years now. The ‘nutritional check up’ appointment is a chance for us to review and assess progress made.
Every horse and pony is an individual. Their nutritional ration plans should be designed to evolve as their needs change. The regular ‘check-up’s’ give us the opportunity to look at what’s going well, what might need adjusting and, most importantly, how the equine is presenting at that time.
It’s important to always see the bigger picture and to make alterations in order to support their health and wellbeing on an ongoing basis. ✨

Lots more nutritional check up’s taking place in October. For most equines right now, seasonal grass intake is increasing the calorie content of their ration. Remember to assess Body Condition on a regular basis and also, weigh regularly if you can.

Whilst the weather continues to be hot hot hot, don’t forget to provide your horse with additional levels of sodium chloride. Sodium plays a key role in regulating the body’s fluid levels and in turn hydration levels. In the present hot weather, with most UK pasture deficient in sodium, it is even more imperative to supplement sodium chloride. Gastri-kind salt is a palatable and gut friendly way to do this!
