Surrey Hills Equine originated from Priory Veterinary Surgeons, a Reigate-based practice delivering equine care for over 90 years. After 10 years practicing in Surrey and Sussex, in September 2023 Dr Corrado Montoneri privately acquired the Equine branch of Priory Veterinary Surgeons and today, the practice remains proudly independent. We offer the most advanced comprehensive equine medical care by bringing scientific know-how and state-of-the-art mobile wireless equipment to your yard.. This means that we can undertake referral-level procedures in any environment, without the implications of travelling horses away from their setting.

Buying a new horse is a huge financial investment. And, if we’re honest, it’s usually a pretty big emotional one too. ☺️

That’s why we 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 on any horse or pony you’re considering buying.

Even if you’re already at the “I’m having this horse whatever the vet says” stage, a vetting can still be incredibly useful. Forewarned is forearmed, and knowing about anything that may need managing can help you understand what you’re taking on and how best to support that horse going forward.

A vetting isn’t simply about finding a reason to buy or not buy. It’s about giving you more information about the horse in front of you and how suitable they may be for the job you have in mind. It can also highlight anything that may affect insurance cover or be relevant if you decide to sell them on in the future.

For performance horses in particular, Corrado also brings his own experience as an international event rider to the process, so he understands the demands of competition from both the veterinary and rider’s side.

A newer face at Surrey Hills Equine, but already a familiar one to many of our clients: Emily Nicholls, Veterinary Surgeon. 👩‍⚕️

Since graduating from the Royal Veterinary College in 2023, Emily has packed a lot into the start of her veterinary career, gaining experience in equine hospitals in both the UK and Australia!

While working as part of the referral team at a large equine hospital in the South East, Emily rotated through orthopaedic surgery, internal medicine and anaesthesia, alongside caring for hospitalised patients, and it was here that her passion for internal medicine really developed.

Emily then headed to Australia, where she completed an internal medicine and neonatology fellowship at the largest equine hospital in the Southern Hemisphere, based in New South Wales. Caring for more than 200 foals over five months gave her extensive experience working alongside specialists in equine neonatology. In Emily’s words, it was essentially “five months of sick foals and very little sleep”, but an experience she absolutely loved!

After returning to the UK in January, and taking a few weeks to catch up on some much needed sleep, Emily joined the Surrey Hills Equine vets team and has been really enjoying ambulatory practice and tying relations with lovely clients ever since.

Outside of work, Emily enjoys keeping active, going to the gym and spending time with friends. When she gets the chance, she also enjoys the odd creative project, including crochet.

What does it actually mean to have your horse “scoped”? 🤔

Have you ever had your horse scoped? Or maybe you keep hearing people say their horse has been “scoped” and you’ve been wondering what they actually mean?

In most cases, when we’re talking about scoping, we mean gastroscopy. A gastroscope is a tiny camera on the end of a long, thin, bendy tube that is gently passed up one of your horse’s nostrils so we can look directly at the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine.

It’s commonly used to check whether gastric ulcers are present, or as a follow up to see how well ulcer treatment has worked. The camera examination itself usually only takes around 15-20 minutes and gives us a live view straight away.

At Surrey Hills Equine, we can carry out gastroscopy at your own yard as a first morning appointment, under light standing sedation. That means your horse can stay in familiar surroundings and recover at home afterwards.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll share more about EGUS, what we’re looking for during a gastroscopy and some of the other ways we use endoscopy in equine practice.

A familiar face to many of our clients and the man behind Surrey Hills Equine: Dr Corrado Montoneri, Director and Veterinary Surgeon. 🩺

Corrado brings more than 20 years of equine veterinary experience across Europe, the USA and the UK, with particular interests in lameness, performance medicine, pre-purchase examinations and advanced ambulatory practice.

But Corrado’s understanding of performance horses doesn’t come from veterinary training alone. He’s been on the other side of the conversation too: he was Italian Young Rider Champion, won individual bronze at the Young Rider World Championships in 1997 and went on to be part of the senior Italian eventing team for several years. That experience gives him a practical rider’s perspective as well as a veterinary one, and an understanding of the things riders notice and feel in their own horses.

After working in Florida, Newmarket and Surrey, Corrado acquired the equine side of Priory Veterinary Surgeons in 2023 and established Surrey Hills Equine as an independent practice.

For Corrado, good veterinary care is about more than clinical expertise. It is about knowing the horse, understanding the owner and building trust over time.

And when work allows, he still gets back in the saddle, with a gallop on Ogmore Beach in Wales being one of his favourite escapes! 🏇

Who do we care for? 🐴

At Surrey Hills Equine, we care for all kinds of equines, from elite competition horses to much loved retired companions.

We work with professional and amateur riders, eventers, show jumpers, dressage horses, racing thoroughbreds, leisure horses, ponies and donkeys.

Their jobs may be very different, but our approach is the same: understand the horse, understand the owner’s priorities and tailor our care to the individual in front of us. Whatever your horse does, they matter to us. 🫶

Surrey Hills Equine turns 3! 🎂

On 22 September 2023 – three years ago this week – Corrado acquired the equine side of Priory Veterinary Surgeons and took the practice forward, into a new chapter as Surrey Hills Equine Vets.

Three years later, we’re proud to still be independent and to be building the kind of practice we believe in: experienced veterinary care, modern technology, continuity and personal relationships with our clients.

But while the Surrey Hills Equine name is three years old, did you know that the practice’s roots can be traced back more than a century?

This anniversary is about both where we are now and the history we are lucky enough to carry forward.

Advanced equine care, brought to your yard 🚘

Not every advanced investigation needs to start in a hospital.

Our mobile equipment includes digital x-ray, ultrasound and video endoscopy, which means we can carry out a wide range of diagnostic work at clients’ yards. We also offer gastroscopy at home, as well as shockwave therapy, various types of joint treatment and ambulatory surgical procedures.

For the horse, it means staying in familiar surroundings where they are comfortable and settled. For the owner, it means less travel, less disruption and fewer transport costs, saving valuable time and removing some of the stress.

And when hospital care is the necessary next step, we work closely with referral centres and transport providers to make that transition as straightforward as possible.

This is a big part of what advanced ambulatory care means to us: bringing expertise and technology to the horse whenever it is appropriate to do so.
