Competitive obedience classes

Surrey DTS We train on Thursday nights from 7.00pm to 9.pm .

Surrey Dog Training society started as an independent club in January 1955. Like many other long-established training groups it was originally a branch of ASPADS (Associated Sheep, Police and Army Dog Societies) which in turn had grown out of wartime use of german shepherd dogs (alsatians) for guarding and searching etc. ASPADS ran working trial competitions through various branches all over the c

ountry from 1924. Surrey decided to go independent in 1955 so that the subscriptions of the pet owners who formed the majority at its obedience classes would be used directly for their benefit. But the competitive aspect of dog training which dominated ASPADS was not lost by this change. Surrey DTS has been running working trials since 1957 and is still organising two open and two championship trials every year. In 1957 the breeds placed in the competition were the Labrador, the GSD, the Great Dane, the Border Collie/Working Sheepdog, the Poodle, and the Golden Retriever. Now the placed breeds often include the Weimeraner, the Vizla, the Rottweiler, Belgian Shepherds, and the Springer Spaniel, as well as enthusiasts with, for example, a Sheltie, Border Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier,Gordon Setter, Schnauzer, or Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever. Surrey added to its competitive diary in 1959 when it ran its first Championship Obedience Show, which still features every year in June although it has long outgrown the early homes at Tillingbourne School and Guildford & Godalming Rugby Club. When agility started some thirty years ago the Society also embraced that activity, and runs an open agility show in the summer. The Society remains a nucleus in West Surrey for people who want to take part in organised group activities with their pets. It has survived over fifty years thanks to the voluntary efforts of dedicated members and it is to be hoped that it will still be there in 2055! This is the face book page of the Surrey DTS Obedience section. Are classes are run by our group of volunteer trainers , who have a wealth of knowledge and years of expriace of working with dogs. They attend courses, workshops and seminars regularly to keep up with all aspects of modern training ideas and techniques . We are very proud to say that we are modern , progressive ethical trainers using reward based training and force free methods of training. Our classes are designed to prepare you for competitive obedience. we are happy to help at all levels from those who have never competed to those who just want to brush up on their skills for the higher classes. http://www.surreydogtrainingsociety.org.uk/

(We would ask that if you do not get a reply straight away, please bare with us . All are members and trainers have jobs , and Surrey DTS is run by people who also work and have families. We will get back to you asap , but it might take a few days!)

🐾✨ Scent work is SO much more than teaching dogs to find an odour!

At UK Sniffer Dogs, every search is an adventure! Created by Jamie Pound, this reward-based approach taps into your dog’s incredible natural instincts while building confidence, focus, and resilience along the way. 🐶💛

Dogs learn to:
✨ Associate scent with amazing rewards
✨ Search independently and confidently
✨ Give a calm freeze indication at source
✨ Work through puzzles, challenges, and new environments

The best part? It’s for EVERY dog! 🙌

🐾 Nervous dogs
🐾 Reactive dogs
🐾 Busy brains
🐾 Senior dogs
🐾 High-energy dogs

Using their nose helps dogs slow down, think, focus, and channel their energy in a positive way. It’s not just a sport—it’s enrichment, mental stimulation, confidence building, and FUN all rolled into one!

Watching a dog light up when they solve a scent puzzle is pure magic. ✨🐕

“The power of nosework is endless.” ❤️

Why Hovawarts Make Amazing Dog Sport Partners 🐾💪

Looking for a dog that can keep up with your active lifestyle and excel in dog sports? Meet the Hovawart!

✨ Why they shine:
🐕 Highly intelligent and eager to learn
🏃 Athletic, agile, and full of stamina
🤝 Strong bond with their handler
🧠 Excellent problem-solvers
❤️ Loyal companions on and off the field

🏅 Activities they often excel in:
• Obedience
• Rally Obedience
• Tracking & Scent Work
• Search & Rescue
• Canicross

One of the best things about Hovawarts is their versatility. They can work hard in training and competition, then settle down and relax with their family at home.

At our club, our Chairwoman, Paula, and our Scentwork Trainer, Alison, both own Hovawarts and regularly work them in classes. It’s wonderful to watch these impressive dogs in action, showcasing their intelligence, enthusiasm, and working ability. Despite their strong working instincts, they’re also incredibly affectionate and absolutely love a good cuddle! ❤️🐾

⚠️ Keep in mind: Hovawarts mature slowly and need consistent training, patience, and early socialization. The investment pays off with a capable and devoted partner.

🐾 Friday Training Room Report 🐾

Oh, what a night! ✨

Last night was our Good Citizen Bronze and Silver assessment evening, judged by our lovely Chairman, Paula Foakes.

After lots of hard work and dedication from both handlers and dogs, we’re delighted to celebrate 4 Bronze passes and 1 Silver pass! 🎉👏

One of our dogs wasn’t quite ready this time, but still did a fantastic job, and we’re sure that pass will be coming very soon. Well done to everyone who took part!

A huge thank you goes to our wonderful trainer, Caroline Heale, for all the time, effort, and encouragement she’s put into preparing our students for their assessments. You’re amazing! ❤️

Once the assessments were finished, we jumped straight into our first Competitive Obedience class of the year, led by the fantastic Paula. We focused on heelwork, helping dogs find and maintain the correct position, building confidence, and working through any little issues. We also practised recalls, looked at retrieves, and had a chat about the different competition classes.

It was great to have our lovely Treasurer team, Kay and John, along with our Club Secretary, Silke, with us too. As always, they were busy working behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly – thank you all! 🌟

We were also delighted to welcome our lovely member Maggs, who popped in for a catch-up. It was so nice to see you! 😊

Of course, we had our mandatory tea break… although sadly it was minus cake because somebody forgot it! 😂☕🍰

We’re now looking forward to next week’s Scent Work class and seeing how much everyone has been practising!

Why Border Collies Excel in Dog Sports 🏆

Border Collies are renowned for dominating dog sports such as agility, obedience, flyball, disc dog, and herding – and it’s easy to see why!

🧠 Highly Trainable – They learn quickly and respond exceptionally well to even the most subtle cues.

🎯 Incredible Work Ethic – Border Collies thrive when they have a job to do and can maintain focus for long periods.

⚡ Athletic & Agile – Fast, balanced, and capable of making tight, efficient turns with ease.

👀 Handler-Focused – They are incredibly responsive, often picking up on the smallest changes in their handler’s movement and timing.

🏃 Speed with Precision – They can perform at remarkable speed while maintaining outstanding accuracy.

🧩 Natural Problem Solvers – Their intelligence allows them to adapt quickly and recover from mistakes during training or competition.

⚠️ The Trade-Off
These amazing qualities mean Border Collies need plenty of mental stimulation, training, and structure. Without an outlet for their energy and intelligence, they can become bored and may develop unwanted or obsessive behaviours.

❤️ Border Collies aren’t just energetic dogs – they’re highly driven working dogs, and that’s exactly what makes them such incredible sport partners.

Do you share your life with a Border Collie and fancy giving one of our dog sports a try?

Whether it’s obedience, scent work, or rally, we’d love to welcome you and your dog to our club!

🐾 Friday’s Training Room Report 🍻

Last night was supposed to be assessment night for our Good Citizen Test… but Mother Nature had other ideas. With soaring temperatures, sticky humidity, and thunderstorms threatening to make an appearance, the sensible decision was made to call it off.

Not to be defeated by the weather, a few members decided to swap the training hall for the local pub and enjoy a little pup date instead! 🐶

The dogs took their pub duties very seriously. Polite greetings were practised, attention to handlers was tested, and settling nicely under tables became the evening’s main event. There may also have been some expert-level treat negotiation taking place.

It was a fantastic opportunity to put our training into practice in the real world and proof all the skills we’ve been working on in class. After all, it’s one thing to nail a sit in a training hall and quite another when there’s the smell of chips, friendly strangers, and interesting dogs nearby!

The handlers also enjoyed the chance to catch up, talk training, swap stories, and compare notes on surviving the recent heatwave. (The dogs mostly contributed by looking adorable and hoping someone would drop a snack.)

Jokes aside, evenings like this are incredibly valuable. They remind us that no matter how many classes you attend, training only truly sticks when it’s practised out in the wild. Real-life environments bring real-life distractions, and that’s where the magic happens.

So while nobody earned a certificate last night, everyone came away with some great experience, a bit more confidence, and probably a stronger appreciation for air conditioning.

Fingers crossed that this time next week we’ll be celebrating some brand-new Good Citizen Test passes! 🎉🐾🏆
