Table for one? 🦎 Fresh live food has landed at Fur and Feathers today!

A quick tip while you're here. Feeder insects are only as good as what's inside them, so:

• Gut-load them. Feed your insects fresh veg or a gut-load food for 24 hours before they go in the vivarium.
• Dust them. A light coating of calcium or vitamin powder just before feeding helps keep bones strong.
• Size matters. Insects should be no bigger than the gap between your reptile's eyes.
• Don't leave crickets loose overnight. Leftovers can nibble a sleeping reptile, so take out any that haven't been eaten.

Did you know female northern cardinals sing too? 🐦

The northern cardinal (or "red cardinal") is one of the few songbirds where the hen sings as well as the c**k. She often sings from the nest, and many people think it's her way of telling the male she needs food.

A few more cardinal facts:

• They're named after the red robes worn by Catholic cardinals.
• That bright red comes from their diet. In captivity, a c**k without enough colour in his food can fade to a washed-out pink.
• C***s are fiercely territorial and will even fight their own reflection in a window.
• During courtship the c**k feeds the hen beak to beak.

They're beautiful aviary birds, but they're not a hands-on pet. They need a roomy planted aviary, a dry shelter for our wet coastal winters, and a mix of seed, fruit and live food.

It's Wednesday, which means fresh live food has just landed at the shop. If your reptile's been giving you that look, now's the time to pop in.

Quick tip: for the healthiest meal, feed your insects some fresh veg or a gut-loading food for a day before offering them, and dust with a calcium supplement. Healthier insects mean a healthier reptile.

Meet our newest batch of colourful Budgies! 🦜✨

Did you know that budgies are native to the arid inland regions of Australia? In the wild, they naturally live in nomadic flocks that move around in search of food and water. While wild budgies are predominantly green and yellow to blend into their grassland environment, selective breeding over the years has introduced a stunning variety of colours, including blue, white, and violet.

Budgies are remarkably intelligent, social birds that thrive on mental stimulation, interactive toys, and daily interaction. They are also famous for their ability to learn words and mimic sounds!

Meet our stunning new Bourke’s Parrots, featuring the lovely Spangle mutation! 🌸✨

Did you know that Bourke’s parrots (often called Bourkes) are gentle, quiet little parakeets native to the arid interior of Australia? Unlike most parrots that are active during the brightest parts of the day, Bourkes are crepuscular—meaning they are naturally most active at dawn and dusk. In the wild, they use these cooler twilight hours to feed and drink.

The Spangle mutation adds a gorgeous, delicate edging to their feathers, giving their plumage a lacy, shimmering appearance that pairs beautifully with their soft pinkish tones. Bourkes are famous for their calm, sweet temperament, soft chirps, and peaceable nature, making them an absolute joy to keep in a peaceful aviary or home environment.
