๐ŸŽ†๐Ÿพ Remember, Rememberโ€ฆ Our Pets This November! ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽ†

Bonfire Night is fast approaching! ๐Ÿ”ฅโœจ

For many of our furry friends, fireworks can be absolutely terrifying. The loud bangs, bright flashes and unfamiliar noises can cause fear, stress and anxiety. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฐ

๐Ÿพ Our top tips for a calmer Bonfire Night:

๐Ÿก Create a safe space โ€“ Make a cosy den where your pet can retreat if they feel scared. Let them choose where they feel safest.

๐ŸŽต Turn up the tunes! โ€“ Playing music or having the TV on can help mask the sound of fireworks.

๐ŸชŸ Close curtains and windows โ€“ This helps reduce the noise and flashes from outside.

๐Ÿ• Walk dogs before dark โ€“ Try to get those evening walks finished before the fireworks begin, and keep dogs on leads when outside.

๐Ÿฑ Keep pets safely indoors โ€“ Make sure cats are inside before dark and that doors, windows and pet flaps are secure.

โค๏ธ Offer comfort and reassurance โ€“ If your pet wants cuddles, give them! You wonโ€™t make their fear worse by comforting them.

๐Ÿฐ Donโ€™t forget our smaller furry friends! โ€“ Rabbits and guinea pigs can also find fireworks frightening. Provide extra hiding places and consider moving outdoor accommodation to a quieter, sheltered location where appropriate.

๐Ÿ’Š Does your pet struggle with firework anxiety?

If your pet has previously shown signs of severe fear or distress during fireworks, please contact us WELL IN ADVANCE of Bonfire Night!

Our veterinary team can discuss ways to help, including whether prescription medication may be appropriate for your pet.

โš ๏ธ Please donโ€™t leave it until the fireworks have started! Some medications and anxiety management plans need to be started or trialled ahead of time, so early preparation is key.

Every year thousands of pets will suffer as a result of fireworks being let off. Blue Cross animal hospitals see a marked rise in pets requiring medication during these times.

This gorgeous little chap came into us for his procedure as he was cryptorchid โ€” meaning one of his testicles had failed to descend into the sc***um.

After his sedation, he decided there was absolutely no better place to start getting sleepy than curled up on Nurse Meganโ€™s lap! ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿพ

So, what is cryptorchidism and why do we recommend neutering?

Cryptorchidism is when one or both testicles donโ€™t descend normally. A retained testicle has a higher risk of developing cancer and can also twist, causing a painful emergency. There is also a hereditary component, so neutering prevents the condition being passed on.

Surgery can be a little more involved than a routine castration, depending on where the retained testicle is located, but our team are experienced in providing the care these patients need. ๐Ÿฉบโค๏ธ

And as you can seeโ€ฆ this little patient was very happy to be in our care! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’ค

๐Ÿ’š World Mental Health Day | 10 October ๐Ÿ’š

Today, we want to take a moment to recognise and celebrate the incredible people who make our veterinary hospital what it is.

Working in veterinary care is hugely rewarding, but we also know it can be emotionally and physically demanding. Our teams experience joy, compassion, worry, loss and grief โ€” sometimes all in the same day. ๐Ÿพ

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re so proud to have dedicated Mental Health First Aiders within our hospital, providing a listening ear, support and a safe space for colleagues when they need it.

Weโ€™re also incredibly proud of our Pet Bereavement Team, who support people through some of the most difficult moments we face. Losing a beloved pet can be devastating, and having people who understand the depth of that grief makes such a difference. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿพ

Today is a reminder that looking after ourselves and each other matters. There is no weakness in asking for help, taking a moment, or simply saying, โ€œIโ€™m not okay.โ€

To every member of our veterinary hospital team โ€” thank you for the compassion, dedication and kindness you show every single day. We see you, we appreciate you, and weโ€™re proud to stand alongside you. ๐Ÿ’š

When Phoebe arrived at Blue Cross, it was hard to see the puppy underneath. ๐Ÿ’”

Found on a caravan site with her sister, Piper, and brought in by a dog warden, Phoebeโ€™s coat was so badly matted that around 85% of her body was covered. She was uncomfortable, frightened and in desperate need of care.

Our team got to work removing the mats carefully, and quickly discovered a six-month-old puppy.

With patience, care and time, Phoebe began to show the happy young dog she really was. And now, sheโ€™s found a loving new home of her own.

When Luna arrived in our care, the change in her circumstances left her anxious and struggling to cope. ๐Ÿ’”

The lively whippet had come from a busy home where her family felt they couldn't give her the time she needed. Sadly, Luna found the transition to kennel life overwhelming. Being left alone in her kennel was just too much for her to handle.

Determined to help Luna feel safe, our team went above and beyond to make her time in the kennels as positive as possible.

Each day, Luna was encouraged to choose a new toy to take back to her kennel, helping her to build positive associations with her space. The team kept a radio on overnight to comfort her and provided a โ€˜destruction boxโ€™ filled with treats, giving her an outlet for her anxiety. With enrichment, training, and patience, Lunaโ€™s kennel became a place she loved.

Before long, Luna was back to her energetic and silly self, earning her the nickname โ€˜Kangarooโ€™ as she zoomed and bounced around the paddock at full speed.

A family soon fell for Lunaโ€™s silly and fun-loving personality, and sheโ€™s now thriving in a loving home of her own. ๐Ÿ’™

Could you help us give more pets like Luna a second chance?

Every day we see pets come through our doors in need of a second chance, and you can help. By sponsoring a pet, your money goes towards the care and help that these animals need to go on and live the life they deserve. Click the link to find out more. ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://bit.ly/4hdEDZN

We couldn't believe what poor Sahara and Nevada had been living in together for six months. ๐Ÿ’”

Living in a clear box, with barely any space to run or play, and only shallow bedding, these poor girls were long overdue an upgrade.

Since then, they have moved into a gerbil paradise with lots of enrichment, forage, bedding deep enough to make tunnels, and lots of safe places to hide.

After growing in confidence and trust, they were adopted together.

Discover how to care for your gerbil. ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://bit.ly/4c5BPeq

Five tiny kittens arrived at our Victoria animal hospital, terrified, shaking and huddled together in a box. ๐Ÿ’”

At just five weeks old, Porky, Beatrix, Buddy, Slinky and Dippy were already showing signs of how difficult their short lives had been.

The person who brought them said they had been given the kittens by a friend to sell, leaving us deeply concerned about what they had already experienced.

Porky was in the worst condition, with urine staining and faeces stuck between her paws, while all five would hiss and swipe at anyone who came near.

But with patience, love and time in foster care, their fear began to melt away. Within days, they were confident, playful little kittens.

Now, all five are thriving in loving homes, showing just how much a safe place, expert care and a second chance can change a life. ๐Ÿ’™
