It will soon be the annual gathering of carneddau ponies. The farmers usually gather the ponies around November time. They are then bought in for a health check. Colts are taken off to Avoid later breeding / fighting.
I help find homes for them we sometimes have to take off the odd older pony that may struggle going back up the mountain over winter.
Anyone considering offering homes for the ponies. Please message in here. We get lots of inquiries, not all suitable. These are unhandled ponies who need experienced owners.
I check out suitable applications then add them to my list of suitable homes.
The ponies will be homed from my list of suitable rehomers on a first come first served basis.
So any genuine inquires if you’d like to express your interest in rehoming please message on here.
I work full time so don’t panic if I’m slow getting back to you.😊

🐴📞 HORSE SHOPPING IN THE 90s WAS NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED.

Forget 47 videos on WhatsApp.

Forget slow-mo trot-ups, full veterinary history, X-rays, drone footage and a professionally edited montage of Dobbin hacking past a tractor.

You got THIS. 😂

A tiny, slightly blurry photo in the back of a magazine and approximately six lines to decide whether you were about to meet your dream horse or spend three hours driving across Britain to view an absolute lunatic.

And the descriptions were magnificent.

“Safe but bold.”
“Outstanding temperament.”
“Would suit novice.”
“Good in traffic etc.”

ETC?! 😭

Then came the big moment…

☎️ RINGING THE LANDLINE.

No Messenger.
No WhatsApp.
No casually sending a text at 11pm asking “Hi hun, is he still available? xx”

You had to actually PHONE A STRANGER.

And if nobody answered?

That was it.

You waited.

Possibly staring at the phone willing them to ring back while simultaneously praying someone else hadn’t bought him.

There was no asking:

“Any more pics?”
“Can you send a video in all three paces?”
“Any jumping videos?”
“Can I see him hacking alone?”
“Can you send one without tack?”
“Can you video him loading?”

😂😂😂

THERE WERE NO MORE PICS.

That grainy 4cm photograph WAS the media package.

And possibly the most exciting bit of all…

Waiting for the next week’s adverts.

You couldn’t refresh the page every 14 seconds looking for newly listed horses.

You waited for the next magazine to physically appear and then flicked straight to the classifieds to see what had arrived.

And just look at the prices in this one… 👀

£2,500.
£3,000.
£3,500.

Although somebody was feeling particularly optimistic with the £6,000 dressage prospect. 😂

Horse shopping required patience, a landline and an extraordinary amount of faith in one tiny photograph.

90s horse people — surely we’re not the only ones who remember studying these adverts like they were the Argos catalogue at Christmas? 🐴☎️❤️

Colic is the leading cause of emergency vet call-outs — and a major cause of premature death in horses. Can we reduce the risk?

🌾 Forage matters. Changing hay/forage is the single biggest factor associated with increased colic risk. Changing feeds and not providing access to forage (in field and stable) also associated with increased risk.

🌿 Introduce new feeds or forage gradually over 7–14 days and keep an eye on how your horse responds. Ensure sure your horses are not left without forage.

🪱 High worm burden and recent treatment with wormer increases colic risk.

☀️ Keep an eye on the weather. Weather changes and grass flushes can also increase risk.

⚠️ Multiple factors will increase risk (e.g. hay change + feed changes+ weather change + no grass/forage = big increase in colic risk)

🔬 Don’t just guess what’s happening in the gut.

EquiGut MOT measures gut inflammation and immune activity alongside a faecal egg count, giving you an objective snapshot of gut health.

Planning a change to feed, forage or supplements? EquiGut Optimise tracks gut health before and after, helping you understand your horse’s response.

You can’t remove every risk — but you can make better-informed decisions.
