There are two different presentations of anxiety we may see when working with dogs & careful behavioural assessment can help us understand exactly what is happening.

Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) describes a dog who appears to live in a heightened state of anxiety, constantly scanning their surroundings & rarely seeming at ease. There may be no single, obvious stimulus triggering the response. This can affect the dog both physically & emotionally.
Veterinary input may be needed as part of a behaviour modification plan to support the dog & help improve their emotional wellbeing.

Signs that may be seen with GAD include - wide eyes, panting with an open mouth, lip licking, yawning, hypervigilance, generally unsettled, repeatedly changing positions & displacement behaviours. These signs usually appear across different situations & environments rather than being linked to one clear, specific trigger.

Situational anxiety describes anxiety that is more closely connected to a particular stimuli/situation such as cars or people wearing high vis.
A dog may avoid, escape or retreat from the trigger, become unsettled or even react by barking, lunging or growling.
Anxiety may be associated with several different triggers, so it is not always limited to just one stimulus.

A dog experiencing situational anxiety can benefit from a well planned out programme with an experienced behaviourist. The aim is to help change the dog’s emotional response & build their ability to cope around the things the dog finds triggering.
This may involve play based methods, desensitisation & counterconditioning introduced at a pace/thresshold the dog can manage.

(Signs can vary between dogs & may have other explanations, so it is important to consider the whole picture.)

The colours seem to fall within the spectrum dogs can see & with the seal sounds many dogs appear completely intrigued. Each episode is around three minutes long, which is perfect for holding their attention.

Every time reactivity is rehearsed, the behaviour becomes more efficient & often more automatic for the dog.
If your dog reacts to create distance & distance follows, it learns that the reactive behaviour worked.
If your dog reacts because it wants to get to another dog & is then moved closer, the same learning takes place.

reactivity can also have a wider impact, as reactive encounters may also affect the behaviour & confidence of other dogs, sometimes even contributing to defensive or reactive behaviour in retaliation.

Seek guidance from a qualified behaviourist.

There is a clear difference between being inspired by another professional’s work & repeatedly copying their content, ideas, wording….

Unfortunately, I have previously had my work taken, cropped to remove identifying information & reshared by others as though it were their own. I have also experienced targeted bullying, harassment & attempts to damage both my personal & professional reputation.

This has included reports being made to training providers with allegations about me, i presume in an attempt to have qualifications & certifications that I have earned revoked. Also gossip to people who then approach me online & in person with a somewhat tarnished opinion. This goes far beyond professional disagreement or criticism & may well amount to defamation of character.

For clarity, every relevant post, message, comment, report & interaction has been logged from the beginning. This includes original copies, correspondence & screenshots showing dates & timestamps.
- Removing or deleting something online does not mean that a record of it no longer exists….

Everything shared on this page comes from years of education, continued professional development, practical experience & working directly with dogs & their owners. My content is carefully considered & reflects my own knowledge, professional identity & way of working.

Professional integrity means developing your own voice, crediting the original creator & obtaining permission before reproducing somebody else’s work. Removing a name, logo or cropping things does not make that content yours…

I will continue sharing educational information & advocating for higher standards within the canine industry. However, the unauthorised use of my work, deliberate misrepresentation, false allegations & targeted harassment will continue to be documented & when I feel necessary - addressed through the appropriate professional channels.

Dog training takes time, patience & consistent effort. We are not simply teaching commands, we’re helping dogs develop practical skills, change established habits & in some cases overcome fear, anxiety or a difficult learning history.

Our training takes place in real world environments, including cafés, parks, shops & other public spaces, helping dogs & their owners build skills that transfer into everyday life.

Progress is rarely a straight line & setbacks do not mean training has failed. Lasting change comes from proper assessment, realistic expectations, consistent practice & giving each dog the time they need to progress safely.
