🌿 Why we love taking our young horses hacking…
There’s so much more to producing a young horse than what happens inside the arena.
Getting young horses out hacking is a huge part of their education. It gives them the chance to experience the world outside the school — traffic, cyclists, walkers, dogs, farm machinery, puddles, different surfaces, open spaces and all the unexpected things that come with real life! 🚜🚲🐕
It helps build confidence, resilience and trust, teaching them to think for themselves and to remain calm when something looks a little different or scary.
It also helps develop a horse physically. Walking over different terrain, going up and down hills and working over varied surfaces can all contribute to strength, balance and coordination.
But perhaps most importantly, hacking teaches young horses that their rider is there to help them through new situations. We can expose them to things gradually, give them time to process what they see and reward the right reactions — creating a horse who is confident rather than simply obedient.
And let’s be honest… sometimes they just need to get out of the arena and see something other than the same four walls! 😂
At Skyline Dressage, we believe in producing horses with a solid education and the confidence to deal with the world around them — not just horses who can perform beautifully in an arena.
A well-rounded horse is a happy horse. 🤍
