My Breeder Decisions – Part 10 🐾

When a female is nursing a litter, checking her is just as important as checking her puppies.

One of the things I do several times every day is physically check every mammary gland for changes — heat, firmness, swelling, discomfort or anything that feels different from the previous check.

Mastitis can develop quickly, and recognising those early changes gives me the opportunity to act before we have a much bigger problem.

It only takes a few minutes, but it’s an important part of my daily post-whelping routine. 💜

Don’t just monitor the puppies — monitor mum too.

My Breeder Decisions – Part 9 🐾

There are a few things that have earned a permanent place in my whelping kit, and Nutri-Plus Gel is one of them.

Late pregnancy, labour and the beginning of lactation can place huge energy demands on a female — often at exactly the time when her appetite isn’t at its best.

This is one of the products I choose to have available when I need a convenient source of additional energy and nutritional support.

When appetite disappears, the energy demands don’t. 💜

My Breeder Decisions – Part 8 🐾

Tying my puppies’ umbilical cords is something I routinely choose to do after birth.

It’s such a simple step, but there are important reasons behind it — helping to prevent continued bleeding, reducing the risk of contamination and protecting against accidental trauma if mum chews the cord too closely.

Newborn puppies have a tiny circulating blood volume, and the umbilicus can also provide a potential route for infection, so careful cord management is always part of my whelping routine.

Another small decision that has a very deliberate reason behind it. 💜

After talking recently about the professional whelping service I provide, I received quite a few comments questioning why anyone would send a much-loved female away to have her puppies.

And I understand that. It certainly isn’t for everybody.

But this footage shows another side of that decision.

This puppy became stuck during delivery and needed assistance quickly. I was able to recognise what was happening and use a Woods manoeuvre to help deliver the puppy alive.

That’s why some breeders choose to place their female in the care of someone with extensive whelping experience — not because they love her any less, but because they recognise that they may not have the skills or experience to manage a complication themselves.

Professional whelping support won’t be the right choice for every breeder. But for those who choose it, having experienced support available at exactly the right moment can make a very real difference.

My Breeder Decisions – Part 7 🐾

Once the puppies have arrived, it’s very easy for all the attention to shift onto them — but mum should still be one of your biggest priorities.

She’s just been through pregnancy and whelping, she’s recovering, producing milk and caring for an entire litter. This is the time when I quite literally wait on my girls hand and foot.

Food, fluids, toilet breaks, comfort, rest and anything else she needs are brought to her so she can concentrate on recovering and caring for her puppies.

Looking after newborn puppies starts with looking after their mum. 💜

Unfortunately, after being left out of pocket for professional services I provided in 2025 — a debt I am still having to deal with on 1 September 2026 — I’m having to rethink how I offer my professional whelping and litter-rearing services going forward.

This is a service I’m incredibly passionate about providing. Taking someone’s bitch into my home, delivering her puppies and, when required, rearing that litter comes with a huge amount of responsibility, commitment, time and expense.

Sadly, I’ve learned the hard way that I simply cannot afford to provide that level of service and then still be chasing payment the following year.

I am running a business, and while I will always try to help people where I can, I cannot allow that kindness to leave me financially out of pocket.

So, I am still accepting enquiries for professional whelping and litter-rearing services, but my financial arrangements will now have to change. This is likely to include deposits and staged payments, with all fees settled before a bitch and litter leaves my care.

It saddens me that one very disappointing experience has forced me to change the way I operate a service I genuinely love providing, but I have to protect both myself and my business.

Please do still contact me if you would like to discuss whelping support or litter rearing. The service isn’t disappearing — but the way I offer it now has to change.

My Breeder Decisions – Part 6 🐾

Sometimes the most important breeding decisions are the ones we make before an emergency develops.

With Sausage carrying just two large puppies, I knew this whelping could bring additional risks. Having accurate ovulation timing, appropriate monitoring and a plan in place allowed me to make an informed decision about how I wanted her puppies delivered.

In this part of the series, I share why I chose an elective Caesarean section for Sausage — and why, for me, this was about protecting both mum and puppies rather than waiting for something to go wrong.

Another reminder that responsible breeding isn’t simply about responding to problems. Sometimes it’s about anticipating them.

There’s something very special about getting a small group of breeders together who genuinely want to learn.

Yesterday was one of those days — five lovely ladies, plenty of questions, shared experiences, lots of discussion and an awful lot of laughter!

Keeping my workshops to just five candidates means there’s plenty of opportunity to ask questions, get involved and really make the most of the day.

I came away absolutely buzzing from this one — such a fabulous group to teach.

Does the size of the litter affect the whelping box you choose?

With Sausage expecting a much smaller litter this time, I had a decision to make: a smaller space that could help keep her puppies close, or the larger whelping box that gives her the room to fully stretch out and nurse comfortably.

In this video, I explain how I calculate whelping box size, the considerations with a small litter, and why I ultimately chose the larger box — with a plan to adapt it if needed.

Another example of why breeding decisions aren’t always one-size-fits-all. 💜
