Atypical Myopathy - Sycamore Toxicity.

We have seen a case today of a young horse with suspected atypical myopathy. This condition is associated with exposure to sycamore seeds in the horses grazing. We would like to advise horse owners to check their fields for the characteristic sycamore seeds (keys) that can travel long distances on the wind, and to avoid grazing these areas. The level of toxicity in sycamore seeds can vary from year to year - we last had cases about 4 years ago but it looks like we might be entering another Autumn where the risk is higher. Affected horses appear weak and stiff, often lying down and may pass dark red or brown urine. They can look similar to severe colic cases and sadly the condition is often fatal.

CONGRATULATIONS to Lucy Shepherd for winning our Westmorland County Show photo competition! We hope that you all enjoy the sweets hamper prize.

Thank you to the WCAS Society, show organisers and volunteers for having us for the first time at this fantastic event. Thank you to all who visited us, the team manning the practice alongside those who attended, set up or took down our marquee and displays. It’s a lot of work but well worth it for the opportunity to spend time interacting with our local community.
