No surgery today for Rupert 😢😢. He had the general anaesthetic and was shaved to reveal infected skin. I had mentioned the scabs/flaky skin since coming off the steroids to Medivet on Thursday, and was told it was fleas, despite me saying otherwise! Sadly, the risks are too high to have surgery due to the risk of infection, so it is postponed until he’s better. Very disappointing, but have to be patient! Just want to say how lovely the team are at Gainsborough Referrals, JB the owner spent an hour and a half talking through everything with me and the girls who looked after Rupert were so lovely. Although Helen was mortified when I told her I was a dog groomer, as she did Rupert’s clipping 🤣🤣. What do you think of his new look 🤔. So….roll on a couple more weeks 🤦🏻‍♀️

Rupert’s going in for bilateral hip surgery tomorrow. As the left hip is not far off as bad as the right, I think it’s the right choice, but I’m so nervous and hope I’m doing the right thing for him. Recovery will be hard for him but at least it will be over with in one go 🙏🙏. Love this little boy and just want the best for him 💙💙

Does anyone use Butchers Tripe loaf? I’ve got 12 tins which I purchased this week, got out the box, and Quizz has now gone off it 🙄.

Rupert update following appointment at Fitzpatricks on Tuesday. Rupert was booked in for surgery on both elbows and possibly one hip, subject to further in-depth scans. My budget covered this and I made them aware this was the maximum amount I had.

Unfortunately, the news following the scans was not as expected. I’ll try and explain it in simple terms, as opposed to the medical terminology!

The scans on his elbows showed the crack in the bone (which I was originally told would fracture in the short term) was now not considered severe enough to have to be screwed. So that sounded good news. However, it was recommended to make a custom plate for each elbow to shift the weight correctly to prevent further damage.

The scans on his hips showed his right hip was completely dislocated (as I had suspected) and his left hip wasn’t far off. I’ve attached a copy of the scan showing this. Fitzpatricks recommendation was to make a custom hip replacement for his right hip. The alternative was FHO surgery which was not discussed in detail.

It was pointed out to me that these custom implants were outside my financial capabilities. I didn’t ask how much they were, there was no point.

So, after a very expensive and disappointing trip, we are still no further on. Although as Mr Positive Will said, we have in-depth images now! We’ve got an appointment at Swanbridge next Thursday to discuss in detail Fitzpatricks report and decide from there whether to use Gainsborough Referrals or Franks (I can’t keep travelling to Surrey). My thoughts are for him to have FHO surgery. I’m not bothered if he has a slight limp, or altered gait, I just want him out of pain. When I know which specialist to use, and once his hips are sorted, I can consider the options for his elbows. We may be able to manage it without surgery, or at least hold off until his insurance renews!

On a positive note, he is still off the steroids and generally seems a lot livelier/playful than when he was on them. Fitzpatricks did further tests for the IMPA and it wasn’t conclusive. The mild inflammation could possibly just be due to the hip/elbow disease. He has now got very scabby skin though since tapering off the steroids, so will discuss this with Swanbridge next Thursday.

Think that’s about it!! Thanks again so much for all your support, Rupert sends lot of love 💙💙

Rupert’s had a much needed trim prior to his trip to Surrey tomorrow. I’ve been putting off messing with him as frightened I’m going to hurt his legs. But it had to be done as he looked like a sheep and assuming he has surgery on Tuesday I’m not sure when he’ll next be groomed! Very sad that half his beautiful coat will end up clipped, but if he’s pain free it will be worth it 🥰🥰. Rupert says wish me luck 💙💙

Does anyone have a large crate I could borrow for a couple of months please 🙏. I want to start getting Rupert acclimatised to it before his surgery. Of course, I used to have one and sold it 🙄. Thank you xx

I just want to say a huge heartfelt thank you to everyone who has donated towards Rupert’s surgeries so far. I can’t begin to tell you how much this means to us.

Due to his right hip dislocating on Wednesday, it’s looking highly likely this will need operating on in April at the same time as his elbows, at a further cost of £9500.

I know a lot of people think Rupert should be put to sleep but something tells me I have to give him this chance. It’s all becoming very overwhelming, both emotionally and financially. Never in a million years did I anticipate any of this, I’m not sure ‘why me’, but guess it’s just the luck of the draw.

Please, please share Rupert’s story to try and raise a little more.

Thank you xx

This is what Rupert is booked in for 🥰

Rupert’s right hip is basically out its socket, so looking highly likely he needs a total hip replacement urgently 😫. I knew the pain was coming from his hips/back end, not his elbows, so this will now be priority. Unfortunately, Franks no longer have a surgeon to do THR, so have now been referred to another specialist in Gainsborough, just waiting to hear when they can fit him in. Poor little boy, I just want him pain free 😢

Emergency vets for little Rupert this morning. He can’t walk, one of his back legs looks out, he’s in so much pain 😢😢. So sorry again to my lovely customers who I’m having to rearrange xx
