Did You Know?
Shih Tzus Can Have Something Called a “Reverse Sneeze.”
It can look scary at first. Your Shih Tzu may suddenly make loud snorting or honking noises, stretch their neck forward, or seem like they’re struggling to breathe.
Even though it looks dramatic, it’s usually harmless.
Because Shih Tzus have short noses and narrow airways (they’re a flat-faced breed), they’re more likely to experience reverse sneezing.
Common triggers include:
• Excitement or stress
• Dust, pollen, or strong smells
• Pulling on the leash
• Sudden changes in temperature
• Mild throat or nasal irritation
A reverse sneeze usually lasts just a few seconds to under a minute and stops on its own.

You can gently:
• Massage their throat or chest
• Lightly cover their nostrils for 1–2 seconds to encourage swallowing
• Speak softly and reassure them
• Keep their head level (don’t force it back)
These small steps often help the episode pass more quickly.
