🐾 Not all dog professionals have the same qualifications – and that's okay! 🐾

I started my journey as a dog walker. Over the years, I invested a huge amount of time, study, and money into becoming a qualified dog trainer so I could safely help dogs and their owners with training and behavioural challenges.

It's important to understand that different dog professionals have different roles:

🐶 A dog walker is there to exercise and care for your dog. 🐶 A dog trainer teaches dogs and owners new skills and helps with training. 🐶 A behaviourist works with more complex behavioural issues.

Of course, some dog walkers are also qualified trainers or behaviourists—but never assume. Always ask about their qualifications, experience, and what they are insured to do.
Well-meaning advice or training from someone without the right knowledge can sometimes make a problem worse or even create new behaviours that weren't there before.

Choosing the right professional for your dog's needs can make all the difference. Don't be afraid to ask questions—any genuine professional will be happy to explain their qualifications and experience.

Your dog deserves the right help from the right person. 🩷🐾

🎉 Yay! We're finally back out mantrailing this weekend! 🐾

I think we were all a little slow to get started after nearly a month without trailing, but it didn't take long before every team got back into the swing of things. The dogs were amazing, and it was fantastic to see everyone's confidence return as the trails went on.

A huge well done to all the teams – it's so good to be back doing what we love! 🐶🐾💙

☀️ It looks like another Heatwave is on the way soon – Please Put Your Dog's Safety First 🐾

With temperatures set to rise again, please take extra precautions. While many dogs love being active, hot weather can quickly become dangerous and, in some cases, life-threatening.

Please remember:

• Walk during the coolest parts of the day – early morning or late evening.
• Check pavement temperatures before heading out. If it's too hot for the back of your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.
• Ensure your dog has constant access to fresh, cool water.
• Avoid strenuous exercise, ball throwing, running, or prolonged activity in the heat.
• Provide plenty of opportunities to rest in shaded, well-ventilated areas.

Heatstroke can develop rapidly and should always be treated as a medical emergency. Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, disorientation, vomiting, or collapse are all warning signs that require immediate action.

For my mantrailing clients, the welfare of your dogs will always come first. Depending on temperatures, sessions may be moved to more shaded locations, starting times adjusted to work in cooler conditions, trails adjusted to reduce exertion and rescheduled, or cancelled altogether if temperatures are considered too high for safe participation. I will continue to monitor forecasts closely and contact affected clients as necessary.

Thank you for helping me keep our dogs safe, healthy, and happy during this hot weather. 🐾

🏭🐾 Sunday's Mantrailing Adventure 🐾🏭

On Sunday we headed into an industrial area, which gave our teams plenty of different challenges to think about and work through. From changes in elevation and undulation, to alleyways, junctions, and understanding how the wind was affecting scent, there was lots for both dogs and handlers to process.
The great thing about mantrailing is that every challenge is a learning opportunity, and that's exactly what we saw.

Each handler came away having learnt something new or noticing subtle changes in their dog's behaviour and indication.

It was fantastic to hear comments like, "Yep, I saw that too!" as handlers recognised their dogs working through scent problems and making decisions on the trail. Those moments are invaluable and show just how much the partnership between dog and handler is developing.

These are experienced teams, but there is always something new to learn, and it was lovely to see everyone embracing the challenges and growing their confidence even further.

Well done everyone – your dogs were brilliant, and your handling skills continue to improve every session! 🐾👏

🌾🐾 Foxtail Grass Seed Warning 🐾🌾

With the warmer weather here, it's important to keep an eye out for foxtail grass seeds. These sharp seeds can easily become lodged in your dog's paws, ears, nose, eyes, and even under the skin, causing pain and infection.

⚠️ Early signs to watch for:
👂 Ears • Head shaking • Scratching at the ears • Holding the head to one side • Sensitivity when touching the ears
🐾 Feet • Constant licking or chewing of a paw • Limping • Swelling between the toes • Redness or soreness
👃 Nose • Sneezing repeatedly • Pawing at the nose • Nasal discharge • Sudden discomfort around the face
👁️ Eyes • Squinting • Excessive tearing • Rubbing at the eye • Redness
✅ After every walk, especially in long grass, take a few minutes to check your dog's paws, ears, nose, and coat.

If you notice any of these signs and suspect a grass seed may be the cause, contact your vet as soon as possible. The sooner they're removed, the less chance of complications.

Please share to help keep our dogs safe this summer! ☀️🐕

Today we're out mantrailing by the sea! If you've never seen mantrailing before, it's a fun scent sport where dogs use their natural ability to follow a specific person's scent and track them down.

🐾 Puppy Walk 1-2-1: The Power of the Randomiser 🐾

We all want our puppies to be friendly and social. The mistake many owners make is allowing their puppy to say hello to every dog and every person they see.

At first it's cute... then they grow up! Suddenly you're dealing with pulling towards dogs, jumping up at people, dragging you across the pavement, or planting themselves on the floor because they expect every dog to come and play.

So from Day 1, we teach our puppies a simple game: The Randomiser.

🎲 Sometimes we play.
🚶 Sometimes we ignore.
👋 Sometimes we say hello.

This applies to both people and dogs.

The key is that your puppy never knows which option is coming next, and permission is always given by you .

By creating unpredictability, your puppy learns:
✅ To focus on you
✅ To walk nicely past distractions
✅ That not every dog is available to play
✅ That not every person wants to say hello
✅ To wait for permission before engaging

Remember, our goal isn't to stop our puppies being social. It's to teach them that being social happens on our terms, not theirs.

The best puppy walks aren't the ones where they meet everyone—they're the ones where they learn how to make good choices around everyone. 🐶💙

🐾 A huge welcome to our newest Mantrailing teams! 🐾
They started the session looking a little unsure and wondering, "What exactly are we doing?" 🤔

By the end, they were tracking like pros and getting stuck into the game with confidence! 🎉

It's always amazing to watch dogs and handlers grow in confidence as they learn to trust their noses and work together as a team.

We can't wait to see how these teams progress on their Mantrailing journey and celebrate their future successes. 🐕👣

Well done everyone – what a fantastic start! 💙

🚨 The Dog Escalation Pyramid 🚨

A bite rarely comes out of nowhere.

Dogs often give us lots of warning signs first – yawning, lip licking, looking away, walking away, freezing or growling. When these signals are missed or ignored, behaviour can escalate.

🐾 Listen to the whispers before they become shouts. 🐾 Never punish a growl – it's valuable communication.
🐾 Prevention is always better than cure.

The more we understand canine body language, the better we can support our dogs and help them feel safe. 💙

Have you spotted any of these subtle signs in your own dog? 👇
