☀️ Hot Weather & Your Dog 🐾
With all this hot weather, it’s important to help our dogs stay safe and comfortable. Here are some simple but effective tips to keep them cool:
Things to keep in mind
The temperature you see in the forecast are typically measured in the shade, surfaces like pavements can be much hotter.
Testing the pavement with your hand isn’t reliable, as dogs’ paw pads are far more sensitive than our skin
Aim for walks early in the morning or later in the evening
Make sure your dog always has access to fresh, clean water
Keep exercise and activity low during the hottest parts of the day
🏡 Keeping your dog cool at home
Use a fan at floor level to help air circulate
Keep windows open where safe, and curtains closed to block heat
Add ice cubes made out of bone broth or coconut water to a bowl with shallow water, or offer them as a little treat.
❄️ Easy cooling ideas
Lay down a cooling mat for them
Set up a paddling pool or provide access to shallow water - swimming in water may have them use more energy than they thought, and then coming out can hit them with a wave of exhaustion and heat.
Make sure there’s plenty of shade outside
🧠 Keeping them entertained (without overheating)
Try scent games or snuffle mats indoors as sniffing can be very tiring and rewarding for a dog
Supply them with licki mats, or frozen kongs as licking is a calming action, so it removes pent up feelings
Use training or “brain work” sessions to tire them out mentally
🦴Offer frozen treats like:
Dog-safe fruit & veg. You can blend them and freeze them into ice cubes
Add some berries to your coconut water cubes.
Frozen natural (unsweetened) yoghurt, Kefiri, Goats Milk, are great licki matts and kong fillers
Bone Broth can also be frozen and is jammed pack with nutrients.
Frozen treats like sprats are also fantastic, as demonstrated by baby Archer
(Do just keep in mind introducing too many new things at once, would upset tummies for some of the sensitive doggies out there!)
❤️ Extra tip. If you are out during the day, consider asking someone to check in on your dog. We offer 15&30 minute visits!
