Penultimate class of the course tonight for our second Sunderland puppy class on a Monday evening 🐾

As we move towards the end of the course, we start putting those foundation skills to the test by adding a little more challenge.

This week we introduced “paw”, not just a cute trick, but a really useful skill for nail trims, drying muddy paws, and checking for injuries.

We also built on last week’s “leave” cue, increasing the difficulty by working around food on the floor while handlers stayed standing. Our pups showed some serious self control.

We then moved onto teaching “drop”, another incredibly important skill that could one day help keep our dogs safe.

To keep recalls fun, we played a round of “What’s This?”, before finishing with some lovely loose lead walking practice.

Watching the progress these pups are making each week is brilliant, but what stands out most is the effort and consistency the owners are putting in at home, it really shows.

Next week is graduation week for this class. These pups have grown so much in skill and in size from week 1, I can't wait to see how they put everything they've learned to the test next week 🐶✨

Week 2 for our newest puppy recruits at our Sunderland class 🐾

After joining us just before the bank holiday break, it was lovely to welcome our newest recruits back tonight for week 2, and they came back ready to learn!

This week we continued building on the settle position introduced in week 1, helping our puppies learn how to relax on their beds and settle calmly.

We also introduced some impulse control games, teaching the puppies to leave food when presented with it. A hugely important skill that helps build thoughtful decision making and self control.

We introduced the heel position, the foundations for our loose lead walking, and we also built further on our eye contact game too, strengthening focus and engagement between puppies and their owners.

And finally, we finished with toy play 🧸 Teaching both puppies and owners how to use tug safely and effectively, turning playtime into a fun learning opportunity and another way to build those all important relationships.

For puppies who had a little break after only one session, they all came back and absolutely smashed it tonight. It’s also clear their owners have been putting the work in at home 👏

Well done everyone, we can’t wait to see what week 3 brings 🐶

🐾 Another Brilliant Evening with Our Monday Night Puppies 🐾

Tonight’s class saw our week 4 pups continuing to grow in confidence, focus, and their ability to work alongside their owners despite all the exciting distractions around them!

We spent the evening building on previous skills while introducing some new games to help strengthen communication and teamwork.

One of the games was the Hand Touch game, a simple but incredibly useful skill that can help with recall, moving your dog through different environments, and even making handling and vet visits feel less stressful.

We also began adding more meaning to behaviours by introducing the "Bed” cue, building on the settling and bed games we’ve been working on over the last few weeks. It was lovely seeing the pups starting to understand how rewarding calmness can be.

Impulse control made another appearance too, as we introduced the “Leave” cue, a potentially life saving skill.

Recall practice continued with another fun game designed to keep our pups engaged, responsive, and eager to check back in with their owners.

And finally, we finished with a round of “Drunk Walking”, helping owners develop the foundations for future loose lead walking.

Every week these puppies are growing not just in size, but in skills, confidence, and connection with their humans too, and we absolutely love seeing those relationships develop 💛

As next Monday falls on the Bank Holiday, classes will return in two weeks time, and we’re already looking forward to seeing this lovely group continue their progress together. And we will also introduce you to our newest recruits who are just beginning their journey with us.

See you all soon! 🐶

After a little break for the bank holiday, it was lovely to welcome everyone back last night for the second puppy class of the evening in Sunderland. And the puppies came back ready to work!

This week we built on the settle position introduced in week 1, helping the puppies learn how to relax on their beds and switch off calmly.

We also started introducing impulse control games, teaching the puppies to leave food when presented with it. Such an important life skill for our growing pups.

We continued building engagement through our eye contact game before introducing the heel position, setting the foundations for loose lead walking in the coming weeks.

And finally…toy play! 🧸
We showed both puppies and owners how to play tug safely and effectively, turning play into a great opportunity for learning and relationship building.

The progress from all the puppies tonight was lovely to see 👏

Well done everyone. We can’t wait for next week 🐶

We were back in Sunderland after the bank holiday break where another fantastic puppy class wrapped up, which means we also got to celebrate another group of puppy graduates completing their 6 week course with us. 🎓🐾

Our final week focused on helping owners build confidence with home health checks. We talked through what to look for from nose to tail, why it is important to regularly check over your dog, and how recognising changes early can help you seek veterinary advice sooner if needed.

We also put the finishing touches on our bed games by increasing distance, duration and distractions.

The pups then enjoyed a game of Toy Switch, which is always a great way to combine fun, engagement and learning while continuing to strengthen the “drop” cue.

Recall games were next on the agenda, encouraging owners to stay exciting and rewarding so their dogs stay motivated to come back when called.

To finish the course, we worked through our final loose lead walking exercises, beginning to reduce the use of food as the puppies became more confident and comfortable in position.

Watching these puppies grow in confidence over the last 6 weeks has been such a pleasure, but the real credit goes to the owners who have put the work in at home, trusted the process and brought such positive energy to every session. You have all done an amazing job. ⭐

Congratulations to our newest puppy graduates and their humans on all of your hard work and your very well earned certificates and medals. 🎓🐾

🐾Confidence Week in Sunderland 🐾

This week was all about helping our puppies build confidence and optimism through safe, positive, new and novel experiences:

The puppies explored....

Agility equipment – builds body awareness and trust in their own movements.

Ball pit – introduces unpredictable surfaces in a fun, low-pressure way.

Muzzle training – creates positive early associations with something they may need later.

Snuffle mats & puzzles – encourages calmness and problem-solving.

Cardboard chaos – helps puppies feel comfortable with noise, movement, and novelty.

Paws up – boosts coordination and confidence interacting with objects.

Different textures – supports adaptability to new environments.

Every puppy worked at their own pace, choosing to explore and growing in confidence with each win 💛

Because confident puppies are built through positive experiences, not pressure.

🐶 Week two at South Shields puppy and beginners classes at Marsden Road Health and Wellbeing Centre… 👀

We worked through some choice-based learning, thinking games, focus games, and started some loose-leash walking and some play 🎾

I always find puppy classes really interesting 🤔

Because although we are following a syllabus… we’re also working on individual problems or struggles that the puppies have

For example 👇

Copper, the Grand Bleu de Gascogne, struggles with tolerance of frustration and can bark at times

But being a hound… also wants to be nose down, so struggles with some focus games sometimes 🐕

Arlo, the golden retriever, generally does absolutely everything that we ask him to do but can jump up if he gets a bit frustrated… so we’re working through that

Lettie, the greyhound, is an ex-racer and she’s never done anything like this before so she struggles with a bit of focus and to work around distractions that she’s never really had before because she’s not had this type of socialisation.

And Loki, the German shepherd, is quite nervous and gets stuck doing one behaviour, so we worked on building his flexibility and will work on his confidence building.

Good puppy classes should always have that individual element to them, it’s not always about every dog learning everything, it’s about having fun and building confidence.

Well done to all the pups and dogs tonight!

Yesterday’s brand new week 1 puppy class in Sunderland may have been a smaller group, but it definitely didn’t lack personality, especially from this little character who kept us all smiling the whole way through.

Week one is where everything begins, and we focus on building the foundations that make life easier for both dogs and their humans.

We introduced our puppies to a marker word, helping them understand exactly when they’ve made a great choice.

We also worked on creating a positive response to their names, building those early moments of connection and attention.

From there, we encouraged some lovely eye contact, which set us up perfectly for their first recall games, which this little guy smashed.

We started "settle", which our new puppy picked up really well, turning settle into an opportunity for belly rubs. Being this cute can be very tiring 😄. And then we finished with some fun, learning “middle”, a great one for building closeness and confidence.

To wrap up, we talked through how to figure out what really motivates each puppy using simple preference tests, because not every dog is working for the same prize.

Such a lovely family to start this journey with, and a special mention to our tiny whirlwind who kept us all entertained 💛
Can’t wait to see how they grow over the coming weeks.

Puppy Class – Week 4 🐾

Tonight we kicked off the first of our two puppy classes in Sunderland, and week 4 is where things start to level up a little… for both pups and their humans!

We began by teaching “paw”, not just a cute trick, but a really practical skill that helps with nail trims, drying muddy feet, and checking for any injuries.

From there, we built on last week’s “leave” cue, adding a bit more challenge by introducing food on the floor while handlers stayed standing. Safe to say, some pups found this very exciting, but they rose to it brilliantly!
Next up was “drop”, such an important, potentially life-saving cue. Always a favourite to teach (and a big one for peace of mind too).

We also added in a fun recall game with “What’s this?” (because recalls should never be boring), and finished with our dogs walking in heel position.

It’s honestly so rewarding seeing the progress each week, and the effort these owners are putting in at home really shines through.

Next week is Confidence Week for both classes, which means lots of new experiences for these pups to explore and build confidence with. It’s going to be a good one 🐶✨
