A fascinating case for our vets, Patrick and Sophia, who recently performed a blood transfusion on a cow after she stood on her own udder, damaging a milk vein and causing significant blood loss. After a quick repair to the udder, a suitable donor cow was identified, and a week later the injured cow has recovered well.

Thankfully, cattle generally have a relatively low risk of a serious reaction to their first blood transfusion because they usually have few naturally occurring antibodies against other bovine red blood cells. Previous transfusions can increase the risk of a reaction because the cow may have developed antibodies against donor blood.

During a transfusion, we closely monitor the patient for signs of a reaction, including an increased heart rate, rapid breathing, fever, sweating, trembling or collapse. Careful monitoring allows potential complications to be identified quickly.
