Welcome Digger to the MCA Family!

Meet Digger, a Jack Russell Terrier who has recently joined us here at Mortimer Canine Academy.
Digger’s owners got in touch with us as they wanted to put some solid foundations in place with his basic obedience, as well as address some signs of aggression that he has been showing towards his brother at home.
As with all behavioural cases, our first priority is understanding the dog in front of us, building engagement, creating clear communication, and helping Digger understand what is expected of him. From there, we can start putting structure and boundaries in place while building his confidence and obedience.
We’re only at the beginning of Digger’s journey, but we’re excited to work with him and his owners to help create a calmer, more balanced relationship at home.

Welcome to the MCA Family, Hank!

This handsome Rottweiler has joined us on our Residential Board & Train programme, and what a dog he is!

Hank’s owners got in touch with us to help work through some reactivity towards other dogs and traffic. The great thing is that his owners have already put some fantastic obedience foundations in place, which has given us a brilliant platform to build from.

We’re now overlaying those existing commands with the e-collar, helping to create clear communication and reliability while continuing to work on his engagement, neutrality, and confidence out in the real world.

After only a couple of days with us, Hank has settled in straight away and is already making fantastic progress. His willingness to learn, combined with the hard work his owners have already put in, is setting him up for success.

We’re looking forward to continuing his training journey and showing everyone what this big lad is capable of over the coming weeks.

Meet Our New Clients - Daisy & Diesel

A big welcome to Daisy the Boston Terrier and Diesel the Shar Pei x American Bulldog!

Their owners got in touch with us as both dogs were showing some fixation towards other dogs when out and about, which was beginning to lead to unwanted behaviours and making walks more stressful than they needed to be.

Our focus is on building engagement with their handlers, teaching them what the lead means, and putting some solid markers in place so they have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. Once communication becomes clearer, we can start helping them make better decisions around distractions and other dogs.

There is no big secret to dog training – just consistency, clear communication, and putting the work in.

Both Daisy and Diesel have made a great start already, and we’re looking forward to seeing their progress over the coming weeks.

Meet our new client Kalah the Dachshund

Kalah’s owners got in touch with us because walks had started to become stressful and overwhelming. Barking at everything and everyone out and about meant walks were no longer enjoyable for either Kalah or her owners.

So where do we start? Foundations.

We are focusing on building engagement out in the real world and teaching Kalah that checking in with her handler is far more rewarding than dragging herself from one distraction to the next. Instead of constantly scanning the environment and reacting to every movement, we want her thinking about her owners and learning how to properly navigate the world calmly.

No dog is born knowing what the lead means - it’s our job to create clarity, communication and confidence

New Client Alert – Merle 🐾

Meet Merle, a young Shepherd puppy who has joined the MCA family! His owners wanted to get started early and build strong foundations - and we love that.

Early puppy training is key: engagement, lead work, play, structure, and recall foundations all help set dogs up for success.

Merle has all the ingredients to be an awesome dog, and we’re excited to watch his journey!

Meet our new client Cooper!

Cooper is a Tibetan Terrier whose owners got in touch with us due to a few behavioural problems that have started to emerge both at home and out in the real world. Around strangers Cooper can be quite wary and vocal, often barking when unsure, and once he becomes comfortable he can get a little overexcited and starts jumping up for attention. Alongside that we are also working on his loose lead walking, recall training and helping him better navigate the world around him.

A massive part of training isn’t just obedience, it’s teaching a dog how to properly socialise and exist calmly around other dogs, people and different environments without feeling overwhelmed. Socialisation isn’t about saying hello to every dog or person, it’s about creating neutrality and confidence.

We are building Cooper’s engagement with his owners, teaching him what the lead means and giving him more clarity and structure so he can make better decisions out and about. It’s still early days but we are already seeing some really positive progress and we are excited to see his confidence continue to grow!

There is no big secret to dog training… just consistency, patience and clear communication.

Meet Enzo

Enzo’s owners got in touch with us because out in the real world he can become quite nervous and unsure in new environments. Nervous dogs don’t always need controlling… they need guidance, confidence building and clear communication.

So with Enzo we are focusing on building engagement through play, improving recall and helping him understand that the world isn’t something to fear. By creating positive experiences and teaching him how to work through pressure correctly, we can start building real confidence from the inside out.

At MCA we believe balanced training is about using the right approach for the dog in front of you. Not every dog needs the same thing, and balanced training isn’t about just “slapping tools on a dog”. It’s about understanding the dog, building trust and using every aspect of training to help the dog succeed both at home and out in the real world.

It’s still early days for Enzo, but we are already really happy with the progress he and his owners are making

Meet Alfie!

This young Labrador is full of energy and always on the go! His owners got in touch with us to help work through a few behaviours including pulling on the lead, jumping up, recall and reacting towards certain dogs out and about.

We’ve been focusing on engagement, lead work and building better decision making around distractions and already, just a couple of sessions in, Alfie and his owners are making fantastic progress

The best part? His owners are fully committed to putting the work in and it really shows. Progress is progress no matter how small and Alfie is well on his way to becoming a calmer, more neutral dog while still having the freedom to enjoy being a dog

Meet Vinny

Our newest client Vinny, a young working line Vizsla, has joined us to get things started the right way-and what a dog he is already! Full of energy, drive, and curiosity… exactly what you’d expect from a working breed.

With dogs like Vinny, it’s not just about “burning energy”-it’s about giving that energy direction. That’s where the real progress happens.

We’re keeping things simple and clear:
✔️ Building strong engagement with his handler
✔️ Introducing clear markers so he understands exactly what’s right
✔️ Developing structured play to channel that drive productively
✔️ Teaching him what the lead means and how to move with purpose

At this stage, it’s all about foundations. Get this right now, and everything else becomes easier down the line.

There’s no big secret to dog training-just consistency and clear communication. And Vinny’s already showing us he’s more than ready to learn.

New Client Spotlight - Barnaby

Meet Barnaby… a young working line Labrador and what a dog he is

Full of energy, drive, and exactly what you’d expect from a working line Lab-but now it’s our job to channel that energy into positive, controlled behaviour.

With dogs like Barnaby, it’s not about trying to “tire them out”… you can’t out-exercise poor behaviours. It’s about giving that energy direction and purpose.

We’ve started by teaching him how to play properly-this is a huge part of our training. Play isn’t just fun… it’s a tool.

This is where we begin to layer in obedience, teaching him how to think even when he’s highly motivated and excited.

Alongside this we’re:
• Teaching him what the lead means using a slip collar
• Building a calm, structured heel walk
• And most importantly… working on recall

Because for us, off-lead freedom is the goal-but that freedom is earned through consistency, engagement, and clear communication.

It’s early days, but Barnaby is already showing loads of potential and we’re looking forward to seeing this young lad progress
