A reliable recall is one of the most important skills we can teach our dogs - not because we want to control every second of their walk, but because good obedience can ultimately give them more freedom.

Recall needs to be built, practised and proofed around real-world distractions before we can expect it to work when it genuinely matters.

NEW CLIENT | MEET BRUCE

Meet Bruce, a very impressive Cane Corso who has recently started working with us at MCA.

Bruce isn’t reactive towards other dogs - his biggest issue is that when he sees one, he wants to get over to them!

For a smaller dog, pulling towards another dog might be manageable. But when you’ve got a big, powerful breed like a Cane Corso on the end of the lead, that strength can quickly become too much for an owner to comfortably control.

So our work with Bruce is all about building better communication, engagement and control, without taking away from the dog that he is.

We’ll be working on:

🐾 Loose lead walking
🐾 Engagement and focus around distractions
🐾 Neutrality around other dogs
🐾 Better handler communication and control
🐾 Recall and obedience
🐾 Introducing e-collar training correctly and fairly

We’ll also be introducing Bruce to the e-collar as another layer of communication alongside commands he already understands.

As always, the e-collar isn’t there to replace training. We take the time to condition it properly, teach the dog what the pressure means and build clear communication before increasing the level of distraction.

With a dog of Bruce’s size and strength, control shouldn’t come down to whether his owner is physically strong enough to hold him.

We want Bruce to understand that just because another dog is there, it doesn’t mean he needs to pull towards them. Instead, we want him to remain neutral, listen to his handler and make better choices.

He’s an awesome lad and we’re really looking forward to seeing what we can achieve with him.

PUPPY SOCIALISATION ISN’T JUST MEETING OTHER DOGS

When people hear “socialise your puppy,” they often think it means allowing them to meet as many dogs and people as possible.

But good socialisation is about much more than interaction—it’s about teaching your puppy how to experience the world calmly and confidently.

That can include:

✅ Watching dogs without needing to greet them
✅ Experiencing traffic, shops and busy environments
✅ Walking on different surfaces
✅ Hearing unfamiliar noises
✅ Being calmly handled and groomed
✅ Learning to settle away from home
✅ Building confidence without being forced into situations

The goal shouldn’t be a puppy that expects attention or play from everyone they see. The goal is a puppy that can notice the world around them without becoming frightened, overwhelmed or overly excited.

Socialisation should be positive, controlled and suited to the individual puppy.

More exposure isn’t always better-especially if the puppy isn’t coping.

Is your dog being stubborn… or are they simply over threshold?

When a dog becomes highly aroused, stressed or overly excited, the thinking part of their brain becomes less effective.

Their nervous system shifts into survival mode, making it much harder for them to process cues, make good decisions or respond to their owner.

That’s why a dog who performs perfectly at home might suddenly appear to “forget everything” around other dogs, people, wildlife or busy environments.

More exposure isn’t always the answer. If your dog is repeatedly pushed beyond what they can cope with, they may simply rehearse the unwanted behaviour.

Good training starts at a distance where your dog can still:

🐾 Take food
🐾 Respond to their name
🐾 Engage with you
🐾 Recover quickly after seeing a trigger

Then, as their confidence and emotional control improve, that distance can gradually be reduced.

Welcome to MCA, Blue!

Meet Blue, a handsome Border Collie who’s recently joined us on one of our bespoke training programmes.

Blue is a rescue, and his new owners are determined to give him the very best start in his new life. Rather than waiting for problems to develop, they’ve made the decision to hit the ground running and invest in his training from day one-and that’s exactly the mindset we love to see.

Every rescue dog comes with their own story, and our job is to help build the next chapter. We’ll be focusing on creating strong engagement, developing a solid relationship with his owners, building confidence, improving obedience, and laying the foundations for reliable recall and real-world manners.

Training isn’t just about teaching commands-it’s about creating trust, clear communication, and giving dogs the skills they need to enjoy more freedom and a happier life.

Let's talk about arousal...

A lot of owners believe their dog has "too much energy."

But what if it isn't energy at all?

What if it's poor emotional regulation?

An over-aroused dog can look:
🐕 Hyperactive
🐕 Unable to listen
🐕 Constantly scanning the environment
🐕 Pulling on the lead
🐕 Reacting to dogs or people

Exercise alone often won't solve that.

Welcome to the MCA Family, Finn!

Let’s give a warm welcome to our newest client, Finn the Labradoodle!

Finn’s owners got in touch because, like many Labradoodles, he’s full of energy and excitement… which means walks have become more of a workout than they should be!

Our main focus is teaching Finn that pulling on the lead doesn’t get him where he wants to go. Instead, we’re building engagement so that he starts choosing to check in with his owners, even when there are distractions around.

Finn can become quite fixated on other dogs and people, so we’re also working on creating neutrality out in the real world. A calm, engaged dog is a dog that can enjoy more freedom.

One of our biggest goals is recall. We want Finn’s owners to have the confidence to let him enjoy safe, reliable off-lead freedom, knowing he’ll come back when called. That’s what it’s all about; giving dogs the freedom they deserve while keeping them safe.

We’re looking forward to seeing Finn’s progress over the coming weeks. Welcome to the MCA family!

STOP BLAMING YOUR DOG

Here's a question...

If I borrowed your dog for two weeks, would the behaviour still be the same?

It's not meant to offend anyone it's meant to make you think.

Most behavioural issues aren't because your dog is "stubborn", "dominant", or "trying to be naughty".

They're usually a result of:

Lack of clear communication.

Inconsistent rules.

Too much freedom before it's been earned.

Not enough structure or engagement.

Dogs don't wake up planning to drag you down the road, ignore your recall, or bark at every dog they see.

They're simply doing what they've learned works.

The good news?

That means it can be changed.

At MCA, we don't believe in quick fixes or magic tools. We believe in teaching owners how to build a dog that wants to work with them, understands what's expected, and can enjoy real freedom because it's earned.

HANK'S TRANSFORMATION!

This is exactly why we do what we do.

When Hank, a 3-year-old Rottweiler, arrived for his residential training programme, life had become incredibly stressful for his owners. Walks were full of anxiety, with Hank reacting to dogs, people and traffic, even redirecting onto the handler. They found themselves avoiding busy places, constantly looking over their shoulders and wondering if life would ever get any easier.

Fast forward just two weeks... and what a transformation!
