๐พ๐ Meet Skyla! ๐๐พ
Our beautiful 11-year-old Shih Tzu Cross, Skyla, was recently seen by Dr Luis for an orthopaedic assessment and underwent a TPLO โ Lateral Suture procedure to help treat her knee injury.
Skyla is the sweetest, gentlest lady and was more than happy to enjoy plenty of cuddles before and after her surgery โ much to the delight of our nurses! ๐ฅฐ๐ถ
๐ฆด What is a TPLO โ Lateral Suture?
When a dog damages the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) in their knee, the joint can become unstable, painful and difficult to use normally.
There are several surgical techniques that can be used to stabilise the knee. TPLO (Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy) involves carefully changing the angle of the top of the tibia (shin bone) so that the knee becomes stable during weight-bearing, even though the damaged ligament is no longer functioning.
A lateral suture technique is another method of stabilising the knee. A strong surgical suture is placed outside the joint to help replicate the function of the damaged ligament and reduce abnormal movement.
The most appropriate surgical approach depends on several factors, including the individual patient, their size, activity level, knee stability and the surgeonโs assessment.
Recovery is an important part of the process, and careful post-operative management, controlled exercise and rehabilitation are essential to give the knee the best opportunity to heal and regain strength. ๐พ
Weโre so pleased with how lovely Skyla was throughout her procedure and we look forward to seeing this gorgeous girl back with us as she continues her recovery. ๐
If your pet is showing signs of lameness, stiffness, difficulty getting up, or reluctance to exercise, an orthopaedic examination can help determine what may be causing the problem.
