Heatstroke
Heatstroke in cats is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when a cats body temperature rises above 40 degrees, usually due to being trapped in a hot space or overexertion. Symptoms include panting, drooling, lethargy, and staggering. If left untreated, it causes organ failure and sadly, in some cases, death.
Warning signs
Because cats are masters of hiding discomfort, you may not notice overheating until it becomes critical. Be on the lookout for;
- Respiratory Distress- Rapid breathing or open mouth panting (unlike dogs, cats rarely pant, so this is a major red flag)
- Discolouration- Bright red or pale tongue and gums
- Behavioural Changes- Restlessness, pacing, or an intense search for a cool area.
- Physical Symptoms- Sweaty/damp paw pads, excessive grooming, or thick, ropy saliva.
- Severe Distress - Vomiting, diarrhea, stumbling, staggering, tremors or collapse.
Immediate First Aid Steps
If you suspect your cat is suffering from heatstroke, immediate action is required
-Move to Safety- Get your cat out of the heat or hot room and place them in a cool, well ventilated area.
-Start Cooling - Wet their coats with lukewarm or cool water, apply cool, damp towels to their paws and ears. NEVER use ice cold water or submerge your cat, as this can shock their system and cause their blood vessels to constrict, trapping heat inside.
-Offer Water- Place a shallow bowl.of fresh, room temperature water nearby, or let them take small sips. Do not force water into their mouth.
-Use a Fan- A gentle fan directed over you damp cat will help the cooling process.
When to see a Vet.
Even if your cat seems to recover after home cooling, contact your vet immediately. Heatstroke can cause internal damage, such as kidney or liver issues which aren't immediately visible. A vet may need to administer IV fluids, oxygen or medication to stabilise them.
Cats at Highest Risk
Whilst any cat can get heatstroke, extra precautions should be taken for;
-Brachycephalic Breeds- Flat faces cats like Persians and Himalayans
-High Risk Groups- Overweight, very old or very young cats
-Heavy Coats- Long haired cats with thick undercoats
