Jinx was very relaxed after his castrate yesterday 😌😻 how adorable is he?!

Did you know a routine cat castrate does not require any stitches? 🤓🧵

On the evening of the 3rd September, we saw wild patient 163 admitted, a juvenile lesser black-backed gull. Although not a milestone number, it was the sort of case that makes it all worthwhile- an animal which wouldn't have survived without intervention and which was in and out in less than 24hours. Lesser black-back gulls are on the Amber List for species of concern, their numbers having dropped by 47% in the last 20 years, so being able to help a species in decline is important.

This young gull had fishing wire caught around it neck. Although not tight enough to cause injury, it was too tight to allow food to pass into it's gullet so it would have starved had the fishing wire remained. S/he had been trying to eat- the regurgitated evidence visible in the cage whilst we waited for the xray machine.

We sedated the gull and took an xray to make sure there wasn't a fishing hook embedded somewhere. The xray was clear so we went ahead and removed the wire- the video show just how tight the wire was around the neck. We kept the gull overnight to make sure s/he could now eat and the youngster had cleared their bowl by the morning! The finder kindly came back the following morning to collect the gull and released it back where it was found.
