Straw, shavings or h**p: is there a “best” bedding?

There isn't one bedding material that works perfectly for every horse, stable or yard.

Straw can be economical and provides plenty of volume, while wood shavings are familiar to many horse owners and widely available.

Everyone has their own mucking-out routine, but there are a few things most horse owners want from their bedding:

• Good moisture absorption
• A comfortable surface for the horse
• Easy daily maintenance
• Minimal wasted bedding

A good bed isn't necessarily the deepest bed either. The aim is to create a comfortable, dry surface while keeping the wet and dirty material contained underneath until it's removed.
