Mantrailing & Scent Detection training for pet dogs and owners

A wonderful scent filled Saturday with Worcester Search & Scent Dogs Ltd.. a new beginners course saw three new teams of Boller, Milo, and Rue… looked at “searching” and search patterns for week 1 and the dos and don’ts of their new scent kit….

They have their homework to start conditioning their new scent and I’m really looking forward to seeing them next week … great work guys!

Last night was the last session ofWorcester Search & Scent Dogs Ltd Late Sumner Skills course and it was a tad windy! We did have some inside space and other options so the teams made the most of it.

We started with looking at odd items in the search area and how the dogs can gravitate towards those items and then the team misses parts of the perimeter.

We looked at a search which went around a large corner and one part of it was undercover slightly so the odour was doing very odd things.. it was great to review. Where could the the dog pick up the odour and where should the handler task in the dog in order not to miss any hides….

We finished the night with a recap on high hides and the dog’s body language and how it can differ.

Worcester Search & Scent Dogs Ltd and Puppy School with Harry's Hounds held 2 trials today at a venue in Gloucester.

The Pre~Entry trial in the afternoon benefited from not too much rain but we still had showers!

Week 2 of Worcester Search & Scent Dogs Ltd Late Summer Skills course and Teams Basil, Bea, and Magni had dry weather after the torrential downpours and hail earlier in the day. The venue has lots of covered areas but we still used the outside to make the most of the intricate and challenging areas.

Search 1 a look at line handling and how to work an area with lots of different corners and awkward parts to an area .

Selection boxes was next as systematic searching isn’t always practiced. The teams looked at different approaches what to look for in their dogs behaviour and what responses they get from different distractions eg food. Multiple hides was also practiced.

Search 2,3 and 4 were small the teams aced a high hide and different surfaces and looked at the difference in their dogs whilst searching a blank area….

A great night, videos were taken to review next week.

A fantastic evening Mantrailing with Worcester Search & Scent Dogs Ltd and Puppy School with Harry's Hounds last night with the woods making it cooler.

Teams Bertie, Bunny, Noodles and Tilly successfully completed an hour aged trail and then moved on to an introduction to walking trail-layers and looking at indications.

Novel scent articles also made an appearance with my favourite - yes I gave them all a ball point pen!

Brilliant work guys!

A great first week for 4 teams with Worcester Search & Scent Dogs Ltd on their Summer Skills Course. Teams Bea, Flossi, Lila and Magni started with some perimeter work, so looking at body positioning and line handling then an inside search concentrating on covering the area and building scent stamina. Vehicles were next, how to search and how the scent can move around a vehicle. Finished the night with a small exterior again concentrating on perimeter work and search patterns …

Teams Arlo, Jago, Stanley & Tilly had a great morning with aged trails, split trails, and walking trail-layers…

All teams worked really well and also worked on their indications to complete the trails…

It was the last week of Worcester Search & Scent Dogs Ltd Summer Skills Scent Course tonight and the teams of Finn, Flossi and Rufus tackled some challenging searches,. They were tested on their handling skills, when they were and when they were not, in odour, giving the dog space to work so they have to master the ability to read their dogs but also giving the dog time to problem solve themselves.
The videos I made last week were discussed and takeaway learning points noted..

Team Bryn joined them for the evening too..

It was a great 3 weeks but all good things must come to an end and I look forward to the next one…
