This c**t foal from a beautiful mare Flower was admitted to the hospital at just 28 hours old after developing persistent colic and severe abdominal distension shortly after birth.
Investigations showed a significant meconium impaction, which initially responded well to treatment. However, he then developed difficulty urinating and was unable to empty his bladder properly. Despite intensive medical management and close monitoring, he went on to develop a uroperitoneum due to a small tear in the bladder.
He required surgery to repair the bladder, and a temporary cystotomy tube was placed to allow urine to drain while the bladder and urethra healed.
Thankfully, he made an excellent recovery. Within 12 hours of surgery, he was bright and happily nursing from his mum, and over the following days he began urinating normally again.
Even better, he is now a big, strong, thriving c**t, happily enjoying life out in the fields of Dartmoor with his brothers and sisters โ€” you would hardly know he had such a difficult start to life.
A challenging case requiring a huge team effort from our team of medicine specialists, surgeons, interns, nurses, and support staff, but an incredibly rewarding outcome for this lovely boy.โœจ

On 14th May, we carried out the first equine clinical trial, led by Veronica Roberts, exploring a potential new non-invasive treatment for trigeminal-mediated headshaking.

With a molasses lick and a bowl of chaff on offer, all horses took part calmly and comfortably. Theyโ€™ve now returned home while we evaluate whether this treatment can make a meaningful difference.
