It’s National Canine Enrichment Day!

When we say “enrichment”, it’s easy to picture puzzle feeders, lick mats and cupboards overflowing with dog toys.

But enrichment can be much simpler than that.

Letting your dog stop and sniff on their walk.

Scattering some of their dinner in the grass.

Taking a different route and letting them explore somewhere new.

Giving them a cardboard box to investigate.

Playing a game of tug.

Doing five minutes of training just for fun.

Or even letting your dog choose which way you go on your walk.

Enrichment is really about giving dogs opportunities to use their brains, senses and natural behaviours, and what one dog finds enriching might be completely boring to another.

So today, let your dog choose the activity.

🐾THINGS YOUR DOG WALKER WON'T ALWAYS TELL YOU🐾

We think about your dogs when we’re not working.

We wonder how that vet appointment went.

We remember that they were a little quieter than usual yesterday.

We notice when they’ve had a haircut, lost a tooth or got a new collar.

We notice a change in their p**p 😆

We know which treats they love, which puddles they’ll make a beeline for and exactly which bit of the walk deserves an unnecessarily thorough sniff.

We celebrate the little wins. The nervous dog who finally comes running to greet us. The youngster who’s starting to make better choices. The older dog who’s having a particularly bouncy day.

We notice the years passing too. The first little grey hairs appearing, the walks becoming a little slower, and the familiar puppy face somehow turning into a distinguished old friend.

We worry about them when they’re poorly.

We miss them when they’re on holiday.

And when one of them is no longer with us, we grieve them too.

Because they're not just names in a diary.

We get to know and love them. Their routines, their quirks, their good days and their not-so-good ones.

Being a dog walker might be our job.

But caring about them doesn’t clock off when the walk ends.

THURSDAY THOUGHT: Good dog training can look really boring.

Sometimes the best training session doesn’t look impressive at all.

No fancy tricks.
No perfect heelwork.
No dramatic transformation.

It might just be your dog noticing another dog and choosing to look back at you.

Settling on their mat while you make a cup of tea.

Walking past something they usually struggle with, but coping just a little bit better than last time.

Or simply being able to stop, sniff and take in the world without feeling overwhelmed.

These tiny, uneventful moments are often where the real progress is happening.

Don’t underestimate the boring bits.

They’re often the bits that change everyday life.

This is skylar who came to us absolutely wary of everything and unable to settle, last weekend we entered a fun dog show and this is how settled she was waiting her turn to be fussed by the judges ❤️

WISDOM WEDNESDAY: “He never does that for the dog walker!”

Ever had someone else handle your dog and suddenly they appear to have forgotten every bad habit they’ve ever had?

It doesn’t necessarily mean your dog respects them more, or that you’re doing anything wrong.

Dogs learn patterns incredibly well, and those patterns can become attached to particular people.

Your dog might have learned that pulling gets them somewhere faster with one person, but not another. They might expect play when one family member picks up the lead, but settle into “walking mode” with somebody else.

Even tiny differences in timing, body language, lead handling and reinforcement can change what your dog expects to happen next.

This is also why a behaviour learned beautifully with your trainer doesn’t always magically transfer straight back to everyday life.

Training needs to be practised with different people, in different places and in different situations before we can expect a dog to truly understand the rule.

So if your dog suddenly turns into an absolute model citizen for someone else...

Don’t take it personally.

They’ve just read a different version of the rulebook.

Training Tip Tuesday: Reward the check-in

When you're out walking, does your dog ever glance back at you without being asked?

Don't waste it!

Every time your dog voluntarily looks back, comes closer, slows down to match you or chooses to reconnect with you, acknowledge it. That might be a treat, some praise, or simply continuing towards something they want to investigate.

We often spend lots of time teaching our dogs to pay attention when we ask for it, but rewarding the moments they choose to check in can be even more valuable.

Over time, those little choices can build a dog who naturally keeps tabs on where you are, even when the world around them is interesting.

On your next walk, try counting how many times your dog checks in with you without being prompted.

You might be surprised!
