Did you know that both veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses have to keep up to date with their knowledge by either taking part in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) or writing articles/research papers?

Our RVN Mary Beth wrote an article on nursing BOAS patients and submitted it to be published in the BVNA (The British Veterinary Nursing Association) Veterinary Nursing Journal. We are very proud to see her work in print and have all enjoyed reading her extensive overview of the subject. Her research time for the article counts as hours for her own CPD requirement and the article itself in turn provides a number of hours CPD for those in the veterinary profession who read it.

After all the joy of the puppies born safe and happy last week, thanks to an owner who knew when to ask for help, we felt it was important to touch on what to watch out for when your dog is having puppies.

Firstly, our brachycephalic breeds such as pugs and french bulldogs often require assistance in the form of a C-section due to the broad heads of the pups and the narrow pelvis of the bitch. If you are breeding these types of dogs, then it is quite likely help will be required from your vet and this should be considered when deciding if you are emotionally and financially prepared for the responsibility of producing puppies.

Once whelping begins, watch for the following:

1. If your bitch is straining but produces no pup after 20 minutes of hard contractions

2. If the gap between the last puppy being born is reaching 1.5-2 hours and no sign of any others.

3. If your bitch is extremely unsettled, unwell or uncomfortable

4. If no puppy comes out but there is a lot of green discharge

5. Large amounts of blood

6. If you still expect puppies to come but your bitch has stopped straining and it has been 1-2 hours since the last pup

7. Any sign of illness, collapse or high temperature in the bitch

8. Any sign of a puppy being in breach position (coming tail first) or being stuck

⚠️ All of these scenarios are reason to call your vet and a timely visit will increase the chances of survival for both puppies and their mum.

We would much rather you call and everything actually be okay rather than reaching a point where there is a real possibility of losing everyone.

Best of luck to all our staff today who are away to torture themselves for charity at Tough Mudder UK
We haven't quite hit our target so if anyone still has yet to sponsor today's run, please do! It is all going towards Greyhound Rescue Fife: Please Choose Me and Fife Cat Shelter SC021654

For everyone who has donated, shared or even wished us good luck for today, we want to thank you! It means the world. We will of course have photos to share of the survivors later today 😂

We do still have our Saturday clinic running so for any emergencies, do just call the practice and you will be taken care of by our awesome team.

Have a great weekend ❤️

⚠️ Surgical photos ⚠️

This sweet lady is one of our favourites here at Kingdom Veterinary Clinic. Today we gave her a helping hand with the delivery of her puppies, all of which were born alive and healthy 🥰

It took a lot of team work: our SVN Jess and RVN Marisa were on puppy revival duty. Vets Emma and Morag took care of the surgical side of things, safely but quickly delivering the pups, while RVN Mary Beth kept a close eye on mum, keeping her safe under anaesthesia.

An awesome end to the day, a very proud mum with her puppies and a great owner who knew when to get her girl help. These are the days that make veterinary amazing.

❤️ Team work makes the dream work ❤️

Always happy to help our hedgehog friends 🥰 Delighted to see Roberta doing well with all the hard work put in by Burntisland Hedgehog Haven

A big thank you to the person who brought her into us as without them, she wouldn't have got the chance she needed.

As always, hedgehogs shouldn't be out during the day. If you see one out in daylight, please bring them to your nearest vet or hedgehog rescue.

We're a week away from the tough mudder run and we would like to ask our followers, clients, friends and family to help us reach our fundraising goal. Last year we raised over £1000 for Fife Cat Shelter SC021654 .

This year we decided to donate our fundraising efforts to both Fife Cat Shelter and Greyhound Rescue Fife: Please Choose Me and while we are a little ways off from our goal, any amount will give these two charities a helping hand. If you're not in a position to give, please share the post and hopefully we'll be able to do something good together for the dogs and cats of fife ❤️

As we enter the month of May, which is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month, we would like to say a big thank you to the nurses who keep our practice moving behind the scenes ❤️

From keeping your pets safe under anesthesia, doing bloods, X-rays, and keeping the stock right, to offering kind words to owners during difficult times or keeping the vets right with a well timed cup of tea, our nursing team is always there ready to help.

If any of our clients would feel comfortable sharing a moment when any of our nurses made a positive impact to their experience in our practice, please mention it below in the comments.
