🐾💚 Pico’s Story — The Heart of The Canine Cottage Way 💚🐾
Pico is my own dog, but his journey began as a Romanian rescue. One of my customers was fostering him and would bring him into the salon for baths alongside her own dog. From the very beginning, Pico took to me — and to my other dog, Lola — and I just knew he was meant to be part of our family. I met Pico on a Wednesday, and by Friday, he was home.
When Pico first arrived, he was frightened, skittish, and unsure of the world. He had scars around his neck that suggested past abuse, and although we were told he was six years old, I believe he was much younger. Fear had shaped his behaviour. In the early days, Pico would shake, p*e himself, and struggled to trust.
We followed the 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months rule, giving him the time, space, and patience he needed to feel safe — first at home.
But trust doesn’t stop at the front door. Dogs don’t just need to feel safe in their homes — they need to feel safe in every environment, especially in a grooming salon. This belief sits at the core of everything we do at The Canine Cottage.
Pico’s grooming journey mirrors our values exactly. Grooming was overwhelming for him at first — the sounds, sensations, tools, and handling all took time to process. We never rushed him. We listened, adapted, and worked at his pace. That is how we groom every dog who walks through our doors.
Today, Pico has come an incredibly long way. He now confidently takes part in our first aid teaching days, happily standing to be bandaged and handled — something that once felt impossible. His trust has grown not just with me, but with people, environments, and experiences he once found frightening.
Like many dogs, Pico still has areas we’re working through. As of 2026, his only real grooming challenge is the dryer around his neck. But even that is improving — slowly, steadily, and without pressure. At Canine Cottage, progress matters more than perfection.
Pico’s journey is the reason we do not rush dogs. It’s why we offer breaks, quiet spaces, desensitisation, and a calm, compassionate approach. Trust must be built everywhere — at home, in the salon, and in every interaction. When dogs feel safe, everything else follows. 🐶💚
