The team here at Beechwood is taking a short break! We will be closed on Monday 20th July for the Fair Monday holiday.

☀️ WHEN IN DOUBT, SIT THE WALK OUT ☀️

We all know never to leave a dog in a hot car, even for a few minutes. But did you know that 10 times as many dogs need veterinary care for heatstroke after being walked in warm weather than after being trapped in a car?

It’s incredibly warm across Scotland right now. Because it doesn't feel completely unbearable to us, it’s easy to think a quick daytime walk is fine. But our dogs wear a permanent fur coat and can't sweat—they rely on panting, which simply isn’t enough in this weather. They also tend to mask their discomfort until it’s too late.

No dog ever died from missing a walk, but many have died from being exercised in the heat.

🐾 Safe Summer Guidelines:
⏱️ Shift the clock: Stick strictly to early mornings or late evenings. Skip the midday sun entirely.

⚽ Ditch the fetch: Running in this heat can cause heatstroke in minutes. Leave the ball at home and opt for a slow, shady "sniffari" or an early morning swim instead.

🖐️ The 5-second test: If you can’t comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it’s far too hot for their paws.

💧 Hydration: Ensure all pets (including rabbits and guinea pigs in the shade) have plenty of fresh, cool water.

🚨 Emergency Action: "Wet then Vet"
If your dog collapses or seems distressed, you must act instantly before moving them. Cool first, transport second.

Pour cool water continuously all over their body.

Drive straight to us in a cool, air-conditioned car.

☀️ Making the most of the long weekend?

While you're enjoying the Bank Holiday sunshine (hopefully!), it’s the perfect time to have a quick look at the summer calendar. With the schools breaking up at the end of June, the big summer getaway is just around the corner!

To make sure your holiday starts with a smile and not a scramble, here’s your summer checklist:

🛂 For the Humans
Passport Check: Now's the time to check the expiry date! Make sure yours has enough time left for your destination.
Sun Cream: An essential for everyone, but particularly for those of us with a "Scottish" complexion! Grab your SPF now to avoid those eye-watering airport prices

🐾 For the Furry Family
If your pets are heading to the kennels or catteries while you’re away, they need to be holiday-ready too:

Kennel Cough (Don't miss the window!): This is the big one. Most boarding facilities require this to be done at least 2 weeks before they arrive. Booking it in the next few days ensures they are fully protected in time.
Flea, Tick & Worming: Check they are up to date so they stay comfortable and itch-free during their stay.
Booster Jabs: Take a quick peek at their vaccination card to ensure all their annual boosters are current.
Top Tip: Snap a photo of your pet's vaccination record on your phone today. It's a lifesaver if you get to the kennel doors and realise the paper copy is still sitting on the sideboard!
