☀️ Making the most of the long weekend?

While you're enjoying the Bank Holiday sunshine (hopefully!), it’s the perfect time to have a quick look at the summer calendar. With the schools breaking up at the end of June, the big summer getaway is just around the corner!

To make sure your holiday starts with a smile and not a scramble, here’s your summer checklist:

🛂 For the Humans
Passport Check: Now's the time to check the expiry date! Make sure yours has enough time left for your destination.
Sun Cream: An essential for everyone, but particularly for those of us with a "Scottish" complexion! Grab your SPF now to avoid those eye-watering airport prices

🐾 For the Furry Family
If your pets are heading to the kennels or catteries while you’re away, they need to be holiday-ready too:

Kennel Cough (Don't miss the window!): This is the big one. Most boarding facilities require this to be done at least 2 weeks before they arrive. Booking it in the next few days ensures they are fully protected in time.
Flea, Tick & Worming: Check they are up to date so they stay comfortable and itch-free during their stay.
Booster Jabs: Take a quick peek at their vaccination card to ensure all their annual boosters are current.
Top Tip: Snap a photo of your pet's vaccination record on your phone today. It's a lifesaver if you get to the kennel doors and realise the paper copy is still sitting on the sideboard!

Out of the practice and into the sunshine! ☀️

The Beechwood team is officially off-duty for the Bank Holiday! From long walks at Bothwell Castle to relaxing in the garden, we’re taking Monday 25th May to recharge with our own pets and families.

As much as we love spending time out on the water in Scotland, it actually ties into a couple of really important updates we wanted to share with you all today.

There's been a fair bit in the news about flea and tick treatments lately, and we want to help you keep your pets safe and our rivers clean:

1. Watch out for dodgy fakes online ⚠️

There's been a nasty spike in counterfeit flea treatments being sold by unscrupulous online sellers. These fake meds can make pets properly poorly. We know you want the best for your furry friends—and so do we! Please take extra care and only buy from reputable, trusted retailers, or directly from us at the surgery.

2. Protecting our lovely waterways 🌍💧

The government has just launched their "Be Spot On Aware" campaign. Traditional liquid spot-ons can easily wash off a pet’s skin when they go for a swim or even just get caught in the rain, which sadly pollutes our rivers and harms wildlife.

Why we do things a bit differently... 🌿

This is exactly why our first-line choice for flea protection here at the practice is systemic tablets (the chewable ones). Because it works from the inside, there’s absolutely zero risk of it washing off into streams, lakes, or down the plughole at bath time. It keeps the protection inside your pet where it belongs, whilst keeping local nature safe.
