Meet Jack, a young Labrador who needed a helping hand from several of our hospital teams.

Jack arrived at Vets Now Glasgow after his own vet identified worrying changes in his blood tests. He was very unwell, with pale gums, low energy and severe anaemia, meaning he didn’t have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen around his body.

Our out-of-hours team began urgent treatment, including a blood transfusion, before his care continued with our Emergency & Critical Care and Internal Medicine teams.

Further investigations included taking samples from Jack’s bone marrow, where blood cells are made. The team suspected an immune-related condition was affecting his body’s ability to replace his red blood cells, and started medication to bring this under control.

With close monitoring, nursing care and treatment, Jack began to brighten up. His appetite returned, his blood levels improved and, before long, his tail was wagging again.

At his latest update (pictured), Jack was back home, his leg was healing well and his own vet was continuing to monitor his recovery.

Jack’s story brings together the work of his own vet and our hospital teams, from urgent overnight treatment to ongoing investigations, nursing care and follow-up.

Sending Jack and his family our best wishes as his recovery continues.

There are many varieties of fungi (wild mushrooms) throughout the UK, and while only a small amount of those are toxic, it is very difficult to identify which are safe and which aren't if your dog eats one.

For this reason, you must always treat fungi ingestion as poisoning and contact your vet immediately or if out-of-hours, your nearest Vets Now clinic, so they can provide the right care. If you can, take a sample of the fungi with you.

When a hot water bottle suddenly burst, Cavapoo Peaches and her owner Christian suffered serious burns in a terrifying accident at home.

Despite suffering painful burns himself, Christian's only concern was getting two-year-old Peaches the help she needed.

He rushed her to our Vets Now Manningtree clinic, where our team quickly realised they had not one, but two patients in need of urgent help.

What followed was a team effort, with our colleagues going above and beyond to care for both Peaches and her devoted owner. ❤️

Poor Bodie was seriously unwell when she arrived at our Vets Now Glasgow Hospital, suffering from vomiting, loss of appetite and very low energy.

After carrying out tests, our team discovered that Bodie had developed diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening complication of diabetes, as well as pneumonia. 😥

But what exactly is diabetic ketoacidosis?

DKA occurs when the body doesn't have enough insulin to use glucose for energy. Instead, it begins breaking down fat, producing substances called ketones. When these build up in the blood, they can make it dangerously acidic.

Signs can include vomiting, loss of appetite, extreme tiredness and dehydration. It's a serious condition that requires urgent veterinary treatment.

Bodie spent five days in intensive care, receiving round-the-clock care from our Internal Medicine, Emergency and Critical Care, and Diagnostic teams.

Thankfully, we're delighted to share that Bodie is now back home and feeling much more like herself! ❤️

Her owners are learning how to manage her diabetes with insulin injections, with continued support from our Internal Medicine team.

Well done, Bodie! 🐾

Feedback Friday: Meet brave Bodie!

Bodie was very poorly when she came to see our Internal Medicine team. She had not been eating, was being sick and had very little energy.

Tests showed that Bodie had a serious condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a dangerous complication of diabetes. She had also developed pneumonia.

Bodie spent five days in our intensive care unit, where our Internal Medicine, Emergency and Critical Care, and Diagnostic Imaging teams worked together to care for her.

We’re delighted that Bodie is now back home and feeling much more like herself! Her owners are learning how to give her insulin injections, with ongoing help from our Internal Medicine team.

Well done, Bodie, you are a little star!
