Heatstroke 🔥

Summer is thinking of making an appearance and with those beautiful days comes the increased risk of heatstroke.

🐰 All pets are at risk of overheating in the warm weather, including small furries ie rabbits and guinea pigs in garden runs/sheds.

🐶 Dogs breeds at higher risk are your brachycephalic (short nosed) breeds and any pet who has any existing respiratory or cardiac problems.

💨 If you suspect your pet has overheated or is becoming too hot take action quickly.

🪭 Ensure they are in the shade and in as cool an area as possible. Use fans / air conditioning to cool the surrounding area.

❤️ Do NOT cuddle them as your body heat will increase theirs.

💦 Give them access to cold drinking water.

🚿 For Dogs that are too hot, use cold water to cool them. If they will tolerate standing in a cold bath this is ideal, otherwise using buckets/ sponges of cold water to soak their ears/feet and fur.

🧽Use cooling mats to lie them on (replaced frequently) but do NOT cover them in cold water soaked towels. These heat quickly and act as an insulating layer, resulting in your pets temperature increasing.

☎️ Phone your veterinary practice or out of hours care provider immediately but always start the cooling process at home while you do so.

⚠️ Leaving cooling until you get to veterinary care could be too late.

To do lists growing by the day?

Make sure you add one more job to that list…….
Check your pets vaccination status to make sure they are up to date with all their vaccinations.

If your pet is going into a boarding facility while you are on holiday, they will request proof of up to date vaccination. Some have strict rules as to when a vaccine should be given In advance of your pets stay if it’s due now.

If you are unsure, contact them to find out asap so you can be organised.

Missing Cat - Netherlee Area

Have you seen Mollie?

She has been missing from her home since Friday and her owner of very concerned.

She is on medication for a thyroid issue so she needs to get home soon.

Mollie is 18 years old. Please keep a look out for her and check sheds, garages etc.

With this weekend being the bank holiday please place essential food and medication orders today by 4.30pm to ensure delivery to the practice tomorrow, Friday 1st May. Otherwise, They will not arrive from our supplier until Tuesday 5th May.

⚠️ Important change for pets travelling from GB to the EU ⚠️

There are now new regulations in place if you are travelling from Great Britain to the EU with your Pets.
EU issues passports are no longer valid for British residents. You will now need an Animal Health Certificate issued for every trip to the EU. This needs to be completed by a veterinary surgeon who is specifically trained in this area.
