May is Vet Nurse Awareness Month. A time to celebrate our wonderful vet nurses and the empathy, compassionate care, knowledge and expertise they bring to the practice. 🩺🐾🐕🐈🐇
Our team of highly trained nurses and animal care assistant significantly contribute to the care of your pets and the smooth running of the Pet Practice. A lot of the important work they carry out often goes unseen and on any given day they can be involved in: preparing the practice for a variety of surgeries; administering medications; drawing blood; placing intravenous catheters; running and interpreting inhouse lab tests; preparing patients for procedures; assisting with anaesthetic induction; maintaining and monitoring anaesthetics; supporting patient recoveries; providing care and advocating for inpatients; radiographs and dental xrays; surgical closure of wounds; dental scale and polish; cleaning and maintaining equipment; stock management and ordering; supporting the reception team - assisting with phone calls and emails, client advice, preparing estimates and submitting insurance claims, preparing medications; and managing a variety of nurse led consultations.
They also play an important role in supporting and training undergraduate veterinary students and student veterinary nurses.
This month our team have shared a few highlights of their roles and working at the Pet Practice.
"I love being an RVN and being able to work with different species of pets. One of my favourite parts of my role is consulting, from puppy and kitten vaccines to socialisation - I love being able to help my patients feel more at ease in the practice.
I also love being able to work with the students (vets and nurses) and being involved in their development. I feel really lucky to have this opportunity and being able to experience it with such an amazing team!" Vanessa RVN
"I love working as a veterinary care assistant, the one thing I enjoy about working at the Pet Practice is getting to work with a supportive team. I like being able to help the team throughout the day, by running blood and urine samples, setting up theatre and being able to care for patients while they are recovering from their operations." Rachel ACA
"I love my job and could not imagine doing anything else, I love the variety the job brings with no two days ever being the same, with different case loads and animals with all their different characters.
Another love of mine is teaching, I love getting involved with the students and teaching them in a practical clinical environment. I get so much job satisfaction seeing students gaining experience and growing in confidence. Working in the pet practice allows me to do this and being surrounded by an amazing team." Rebecca RVN
