Living with a reactive Livestock Guardian Dog?
Don't get trapped into believing that you must stop the behaviour completely. Don't punish him or tell him off or yank on the lead - you brought a Livestock Guardian Dog into your life so, let's respect that biological itch and allow him the opportunity to scratch it .... In a safe, controlled, well trained way 🐾

KARAS Rescue - Kangal & Anatolian Rescue And Support UK

I've been delaying posting an update because I haven't known what to say and we're still waiting on further test results from the vet with more details but, basically, yesterday, our most precious, beautiful, perfect & lovable lump ... Our Sanctuary Dog .... Our Hunter-bear was given 2 months to live 😢😢
He has an enlarged heart, fluid on the lungs and an unknown fluid in a sac near his heart which has been sent off for further testing. There's a possibility that the fluid from this sac is related to his heart condition but there's also a possibility that it could be an infection and we need to know all of the facts to provide the best treatment for him.

He needs a ridiculous amount of tablets each day due to his size & his weight and the dosage that he needs which is coming in at £300 per month and his vet bill from yesterday is through the roof after x-rays & scans & all sorts of investigations & tests.

We're doing everything we can for him but we really, really need your help & support to get him through the next couple of months.

His Foster Home (me!!) is absolutely devastated and I haven't stopped crying. I'm feeling guilty that he never found his people and never got to be someone's best boy and then I feel honoured & privileged that he chose me as his person and I remind myself that he absolutely *is* someone's best boy .... He's *my* best boy .... He's KARAS Rescue best boy .... We've never had a Sanctuary Dog before and all of our other dogs have been rehomed over the years and those of you that have been here for a while and followed Hunters story from the beginning will know that we so desperately tried to re-home him in those early days but his aggression was too much and he was returned to us a couple of times so, we decided that we couldn't safely re-home him and that he would stay with his Foster Home long-term & remain under the wing of KARAS Rescue.
He settled down, responded to his Behaviour Modification and actually turned into the most amazing boy who has never, ever bitten anyone since.

Our best boy. Our Hunter-bear.
Please keep him in your thoughts and we will update with the Test Results when we have more information.

I'm sorry to be begging for more money but we REALLY need donations for this boy. Even just a pound or two - it really does all add up if we can find just a thousand people to send one pound so, please, whatever you can afford, we would truly appreciate it more than ever right now.

Correctly socialising your puppy is so important.
We hear it all the time, don't we?
"MUST SOCIALISE THE PUPPY .... MUST SOCIALISE THE PUPPY ...!!"

But, "socialising" does not mean "allowing my puppy to play with every single dog he meets"

The first thing you need to do before you even think about socialising your puppy is to figure out which type of dog you own .... What is he's personality? Is overly confident / bouncy / playful or is he cautious / a little nervous / would rather have a quick sniff of another dog and then move away?

There is a ridiculous expectation that EVERY puppy / dog *must* play with other dogs but what if your dog doesn't really enjoy playing that much? Would you know how to spot the signs?
It is not OK for you to stand around, chatting to other dog owners over the park, whilst your puppy "plays" and you proudly claiming how wonderful you are for doing everything right & for socialising your puppy and telling us all how he loves to be chased .....

Does your puppy REALLY love to be chased?
Or, is he too scared to stand still in case he gets 'rough & tumbled' by a well meaning, over-friendly dog?

Are you actually teaching your puppy how to play nicely? How to interact with other dogs politely? How to enjoy the company of other dogs and how to enjoy the experience when other dogs approach?
Or .... Are you accidentally making your puppy fearful of other dogs? Are you making him dread the sight of other dogs approaching? Are you teaching your puppy that he can't come to you and ask for help because all you do is ignore him whilst chatting & laughing over the park so, eventually, as your puppy matures he realises that he has to deal with this problem himself so, he puts his Boxing Gloves on and starts barking / lunging / snapping at other dogs because he is sick & tired of being bulldozed.
And before you know it you're the dog owner over the park, scratching your head in disbelief because you did all of the socialising but now you've got a reactive dog - how did that happen??!

If your puppy doesn't enjoy playing around then that's fine.
In fact, that's perfect! And far more appropriate than a dog that thinks he can run up to every single dog he sees and body slam into them in an attempt to "play"

It's only play if both parties are enjoying the game.

If your puppy is desperately trying to get away / avoid / doesn't enjoy the game then get your puppy out of there!
Ask the other dog owners to call their dogs away. Explain that your puppy doesn't like it. Have your puppy's back.

Socialising your puppy IS NOT the same thing as POSITIVELY socialising your puppy

My precious Foster boy needs help.
Please donate to his vet fees if you can 💔

We need urgent help

Our Hunter-bear isn't well and he needs urgent vet treatment tomorrow.
Below is a quote for his treatment which is worse case but, as a bare minimum he needs the first 6 items on the list and he is booked in for General Anaesthetic tomorrow.
The GA alone is over £1000 and then he needs the Bronchoscopy on top so we're looking at £2,000 minimum.

The Rescue doesn't have this money and neither does his Foster Home. One of the reasons they never officially Adopted him is because they can't support him financially which is why he remains under the wing of the Rescue. He is loved, cared for, trained, worshipped and absolutely adored by his Foster but they just do not have the finances to fund his treatment.

Please, please can you help us?

We're not ready to let this boy go yet 😢 We all love him so much and we desperately need to raise some funds to support his care.
