Look at that face! Tiny Jimmy is currently working his way through his Puppy Intro to Grooming journey, and he is showing everyone exactly how it’s done. 🐶✨

As you can see from the fluffy snips on the floor and those calm, curious eyes, Jimmy is taking everything in his stride. Why? Because we didn't throw him into the deep end on day one.

What Does "Be More Jimmy" Mean? 🤔

Huge congratulations to the gorgeous duo Onyx and Ice, who have officially completed their Puppy Intro to Grooming course! And today, we had the absolute joy of welcoming this tiny little bundle of fluff, Jimmy, who is just taking his very first steps on his grooming journey.

Seeing these little ones learn and grow is the heart of what we do at Raggy Rascals. But it also brings up one of the most vital questions every puppy guardian faces: Why is gradual introduction so important?

To a tiny puppy, grooming equipment isn't just unfamiliar—it can feel intense and overwhelming. High-velocity dryers roaring, buzzing clippers vibrating, high tables, and unfamiliar handling can easily trigger fear or a fight-or-flight response if rushed.

When puppies are expected to sit through a complete, full-service groom on day one, they are often forced to simply "endure" it. Instead, gradual desensitisation and consent-based handling change the game completely:

Emotional Safety First: By breaking the process down into bite-sized, positive visits, we ensure the puppy's nervous system stays regulated and calm.

Consent & Communication: When a puppy learns that they can take a break, move their body, and communicate when they feel unsure, fear melts away and real confidence takes root.

Slow & Steady Desensitisation: Introducing scissors, brushes, paw handling, and gentle sounds at their individual pace prevents trauma and avoids future grooming sensitivities.

Building a Cooperative Partner: We aren’t just getting hair trimmed; we are creating a dog who willingly steps into the studio feeling relaxed, safe, and happy to be handled for the next 10–15 years.

A puppy’s first groom shouldn't be about achieving a "picture-perfect" haircut—it’s about nurturing a calm mind, building trust, and proving that the grooming studio is a safe place to be.

🐾 HOW MUCH SHOULD A DOG GROOMER REALLY BE CHARGING YOU? 🐾

I often see people questioning the price of a dog groom and saying, “That’s expensive for a haircut.”

But dog grooming isn’t just a haircut. And it certainly isn’t just about the time the scissors are in your hand.

A professional groomer has usually invested thousands of pounds into setting up their business — grooming tables, dryers, clippers, blades, scissors, bathing equipment, insurance, training and ongoing education.

Then there’s the rent, electricity, water, laundry, cleaning products, shampoos, conditioner, equipment maintenance, waste disposal, business rates, booking systems, card fees… the list goes on.

And most importantly, there is time and SKILL.

A groomer isn't simply making a dog look pretty. They are handling that dog safely, recognising changes in the skin, coat, ears, nails and general condition, working with nervous or difficult dogs, preventing injury and making decisions based on the individual dog's welfare.

This is a skilled trade.

💷 A groomer charging around £30–£40 per hour isn't necessarily earning £30–£40 an hour in their pocket.

That hourly rate has to cover everything above — before the groomer actually pays themselves.

And here's something that really makes me think…

20 years ago, my prices were around:

🐶 Cockerpoo — £40
🐶 Small dog — £35

Twenty years later, those prices have obviously had to increase but have they increased as much as they should have.... I don't feel they have.

Just think about how much rent, electricity, water, insurance, products and equipment have increased over that same period.

Yet there still seems to be an expectation that dog grooming should somehow remain cheap.

Would you expect a plumber, electrician, mechanic or hairdresser to charge the same price today as they did 20 years ago?

Of course not.

So please remember when you book your dog's groom:

❤️ You're not just paying for a haircut.
❤️ You're paying for someone's time.
❤️ You're paying for their years of experience and training.
❤️ You're paying for the equipment and products they have invested in.
❤️ You're paying for a professional, safe environment.
❤️ And ultimately, you're paying for someone to care for your dog's health, comfort and welfare.

Dog grooming is a profession, a skilled trade and a responsibility — not a luxury haircut. 🐾✂️

So perhaps the question shouldn't be “Why does a groom cost that much?”

Maybe it should be:

“How much does it actually cost a professional groomer to provide that service?”

🐾 Choice, Trust & Happy Paws: Why Autonomy Matters in Grooming 🐾

I managed to snap a few lovely faces over the past couple of weeks, and each one tells a story of what grooming looks like when dogs are given a voice and a choice! 🐶✨

What does "Autonomy in Grooming" actually mean? 🤔
Traditional grooming often focuses on holding a dog in place to get the job done quickly. But when we prioritise autonomy and consent, the entire experience transforms from something a dog has to "endure" into a calm, cooperative partnership.

Giving dogs agency during their groom means:

🛋️ Freedom of Movement & Comfort: Whether a pup prefers to stand, sit, lie down flat on the cool floor, or take a rest in a cosy corner bed, we work with their natural body language—not against it.

⏸️ The Power of the Pause: When a dog communicates they need a moment to decompress, sniff, or have a stretch, we listen and take a break.

🤝 Building Genuine Confidence: When dogs realise they aren’t trapped and their boundaries are respected, fear melts away and real trust takes over.

🌟 Celebrating Our Recent Superstars:
🐾 The Sibling Support Crew: The first three lovely pups are all from the same household—they come along to support their sister, Beatrix the Jack Russell! Having that familiar, safe energy makes all the difference.

🌸 Rosa the Chihuahua: Rosa used to try to bite her owner if anyone attempted to brush her. Now, through gentle pacing and trust, she comes in for her full groom and is truly happy to be brushed!

👂 Narla: Narla has been coming to me for a long time now. Here she is happily perched on the table waiting to go home, intently watching the door and listening out for her dad’s footsteps.

✂️ Romy: Look at those lovely rounded feet! Getting here has taken time, care, and heaps of patience, as Romy is very touch-sensitive on her front right paw. She has come on so, so much with every single aspect of her grooming.

When we give dogs autonomy, we aren't just styling coats—we're nurturing confident, relaxed, and happy dogs from the inside out. 💛

Just look at these relaxed postures, soft eyes, and calm body language—proof that grooming done with patience and respect works wonders!
