🍂🐾 AUTUMN PET SAFETY 🐾🍂
As the seasons change, there are a few autumn hazards that pet owners should be aware of.

🍄 Toadstools, mushrooms & fungi
It can be difficult to tell which mushrooms are safe and which are poisonous, so it’s best to keep your pets away from all wild mushrooms and fungi. If you think your pet has eaten one, contact your vet for advice.

🌼 Autumn plants
Some seasonal plants and flowers, can be poisonous to pets if eaten. Check that any plants you bring into your home or garden are pet-safe.

👉 PDSA’s guide to poisonous plants:
https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/looking-after-your-pet/all-pets/poisonous-plants

🕷️ Harvest mites
These tiny mites can cause intense itching and irritation, particularly around the feet and ears. Keep an eye out for excessive scratching, licking or red, irritated skin.

☠️ Rodent poison
Rodenticide can be extremely dangerous if eaten and may cause severe internal bleeding, which can be fatal without prompt treatment. Keep all poisons safely out of your pet’s reach and seek veterinary advice immediately if ingestion is suspected.

🌙 Prepare for darker nights
Make sure your dog is visible with reflective lights on their collar, harness or lead. Take a torch and a fully charged phone on walks, and try to make sure cats are safely home before dark.

🎆 Fireworks
Create a cosy, secure den where your pet can retreat. Keep windows and curtains closed and consider playing calming background noise. Start preparing early if your pet is worried by fireworks.

🔥 Bonfires
Bonfires can be dangerous for pets, especially if they are frightened by the noise and flames. Keep pets safely indoors during bonfire nights and make sure they cannot get too close to the fire. Always check bonfire piles carefully before lighting them, as small animals and wildlife may have made a nest inside.

🎃 Halloween
Keep chocolate, sweets and decorations safely out of reach. Avoid real candles around pets and provide a quiet, safe space if they become anxious around trick-or-treaters or costumes.

⛈️ Stormy weather & flooding
Keep pets and small animals sheltered from heavy rain and strong winds. Check outdoor runs and gardens for flooding, fallen branches or damaged fencing.

🥶 Chilly nights
Make sure outdoor rabbits and small pets have plenty of dry bedding, extra hay and protection from cold and wet weather. Don’t forget their cosy beds and blankets indoors too!

🍂 A little extra preparation can help keep our pets safe, happy and comfortable throughout the autumn months. 🐾❤️
