πŸ¦” Meet our newest arrival, and the reason we're back!
Tonight this tiny girl came through the door weighing just 78g. That's far too small for October. With winter on the way, a hoglet this size has no chance of building up enough weight to survive hibernation alone. She'll be staying with us, warm and well fed, until she's big and strong enough to go home.
She needs a name! Pop your suggestions in the comments below πŸ‘‡

It feels fitting, because I'm delighted to announce that Keyford Hedgehog Rescue & Rehab is officially reopening! πŸ’šπŸ¦” Over the past months I've personally invested heavily in upgrading the rescue. The hospital room and pens have been completely renovated so we're ready for the upcoming regulation of wildlife rescues. That means a higher standard of care for every hedgehog that comes through our doors.
It also means I'm strictly limited to the number of hedgehogs I can properly care for. Good care isn't just space, it's food, bedding, medication and vet bills, and it adds up fast.
Since losing Graham, I'm running the rescue on my own, and honestly, I can't keep taking hedgehogs in without your help. If you're able to support us, here's how:

This is Ken. He's very poorly but wanted to thank his friends at Keyford Area Neighhood Group for their generous donation following their summer fete. He'll try his best not to spend it all at the vets πŸ’šπŸ¦”

The latest Wildlife Crime Report is out.

Wildlife crime must not be the cheaper or easier option. Penalties need to reflect the harm caused and any financial benefit gained from offending, whether that is profit made or time and money saved by ignoring the law.

Police, prosecutors and courts must have access to the specialist evidence they need to ensure penalties are meaningful, proportionate and provide a real deterrent. And organisations such as ours, the Bat Conservation Trust, play an important role in providing that expertise.

Even the toy hedgehogs are out on the line as we get everything s***k and span for reopening! With late litters already starting to appear, we know time isn't on our side β€” so bear with us a little longer, we're nearly there. πŸ¦”πŸ’›

We honestly don't know where to start, other than with the biggest thank you to Frome Carnival Charities Association Keyford Area Neighhood Group, Charismatic Pets and Amelia Nash 's guided walk for their generous donations to Keyford Hedgehog Rescue & Rehab. Every single penny makes a real difference, and we're so grateful you chose to support us. 😍

We know we're still not open, and thank you too for your patience with that β€” the work has turned out to be quite a bit more than we'd bargained for! 🫣 But we're getting there, and it'll meet all the requirements for a rescue, if and when licensing comes in.

Once it's all finished, we'll be holding a supporters open morning so you can come and see what we do, meet the team, and find out more about our work β€” dates to follow soon.
So thank you, from us and from every hedgehog who'll benefit. We couldn't do this without your support and understanding πŸ¦”

As many of you know, six months ago today we lost Graham to pancreatic cancer. We will be passing on a pair of his old boots for this project.

We've been given some funding to help raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.

So what are we doing? Over the next few months we will be working with our team and in the community to raise awareness of signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer.

Local artist Caroline Rudge has been commissioned to create an art installation at the practice, which will be very striking and poignant and will encourage conversations about pancreatic cancer and hopefully raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis. The installation will be ready in time for World Pancreatic Cancer Day in November.

For this to succeed, we need your help!

First of all, do you have worn out, 'past their usefulness' adult lace up shoes or trainers? If so, we can take them off your hands. Please drop them into the box in our main reception area by 31st July.

Then on Saturday 1st August, we are looking for volunteers to join us between 9am and midday to help us lace 800 shoes with purple ribbon. Each shoe will represent a life lost each month to pancreatic cancer and Caroline will be turning them into something very unique and special (more on that to come) We'll provide refreshments and hope to be able to chat to many of you that morning about what we are planning.

If you're able to offer some time at our Lace Up Morning please let us know you can come by signing up to our event linked below or on our website events page.

I didn’t get to go along this year but it’s such a thrill to see Apricot the Hedgehog (whom I voiced vocal expressions for) alongside their bezzie Timmy from Timmy Time as the mascots for the this year. I hope to do the walk and fundraise next year, anything we can do to support this endangered species . I still have a resident in my garden who has the choice of two shelters now and a feeding station. Too much? 🀣
Don’t forget to leave out water in this heat folks !
