At FromeK9 Behaviourists, we understand that no two dogs — or owners — are the same.

Whether you are struggling with:

• Reactivity
• Anxiety
• “Hyper” behaviour
• Predatory behaviour
• Lack of confidence
• General household challenges

…our role is not simply to “train the dog.”
Our role is to help you fully understand your dog, create clarity, and build lasting change that works in real life.

We take a holistic approach to behaviour work, stepping inside your dog’s environment and daily life to understand why behaviours are happening — not just suppressing symptoms. We work with both dog and owner, never against them.

Our behaviour programme includes:

✔️ 3 individual face-to-face behaviour sessions
✔️ Access to class environment training
✔️ Structured progression and homework
✔️ Continued support throughout your journey

One of the biggest advantages of our training centre is the environment itself. We purposely use a controlled training area where dogs can learn safely and clearly without unpredictable interruptions such as loose or out-of-control dogs approaching. This creates a calmer learning environment for both dogs and owners and allows training to progress properly without unnecessary setbacks.

Just as importantly, this environment helps create trust. Trust from the dog towards the handler, and trust from the handler towards us as behaviourists/trainers. When both dog and owner feel safe, supported, and understood, progress becomes clearer and more sustainable.

Our experience spans all breeds, temperaments, drives, and behavioural challenges. We believe effective handling matters, communication matters, and understanding the individual dog matters.

While we hold qualifications, our values are not dictated by trends, social media opinions, or ticking boxes for organisations. Our methods and education are built around real-world experience, continued learning, practical results, and doing what is genuinely fair and effective for the dog in front of us.

We never leave clients in limbo wondering what to do next. Every stage of training is guided, structured, and supported so owners feel confident moving forward.

Behaviour work is not about labels.
It is about creating clarity, confidence, stability, and better relationships between dogs and their owners.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by your dog’s behaviour, you do not have to navigate it alone.

Still working hard behind the scenes, changing lives for both people and their dogs — which doesn’t leave us much time to keep our social media updated.

If you see this, please give it a share… it genuinely means the world to us 🤍

One of the more popular breeds we work with is the Springer Spaniel. They are undoubtedly intelligent and driven gundogs bred to hunt, flush, and retrieve. Their strong work ethic and enthusiasm can sometimes contribute to possessive behaviours such as resource guarding, but why?

• Genetics & temperament – Some Springers are naturally more intense and high-energy, making them more likely to guard food, toys, or even people.
• Early learning – If a puppy had to compete with littermates for food, or humans regularly took things away without trading, guarding can develop.
• High-value items – Springers often place strong value on food, chews, or retrieving items, so guarding can stem from instinct.

Signs of resource guarding:
• Freezing or stiffening when someone approaches their item.
• Whale eye (showing the whites of the eyes).
• Growling, snarling, snapping, or biting if the approach continues.
• Quickly grabbing or running off with the item.

How to safely manage and reduce it:
1. Trade, don’t take – Swap guarded items for higher-value treats to build trust.
2. Teach a reliable “drop it” away from items that are of huge value
3. Desensitisation – Gradually teach the dog to feel safe when people approach while they eat or chew.
4. Prevent rehearsals – Avoid situations where guarding is triggered while you work on training.
5. Seek professional advice and support

A popular breed we have worked consistently with over the last few years is the Romanian Rescue.

“You can take the dog out of Romania but you can’t take the Romanian out of the dog”
🐕
Romanian dogs are inclined to react to the world independently of human direction.
Being independent they are often not overly tactile, new owners can find this frustrating.
RR have evolved through natural selection which often means they have heightened survival instincts such as a ‘stranger danger’ ⚠️ radar.
Newly rehomed, the breed can often be sensitive, hyper vigilant and have increased anxiety.

Common ‘problem’ behaviours often associated with the breed are….

Resource guarding
Alert Barking
Strong prey Drive
Natural home protector

If you are struggling with your RR, we can help.

Helping Dogs & Their Humans Thrive

As a dog behaviourist, there’s nothing I love more than helping dogs and their owners live their best lives together.

Yesterday, I worked with a dog whose behaviour had been previously misinterpreted as neurological issues. After working with two other behaviourists who hadn’t asked the right questions, the real issue turned out to be training and more importantly management. With the right approach, together we will change this dogs state of mind, of that I have no doubt.

When you book a session with us, you’re getting years of experience, a keen eye for detail, and a commitment to finding the missing pieces in your dog’s behaviour puzzle. The goal? A happier, healthier relationship between you and your dog.

If you’re struggling with your dog’s behaviour, let’s work together to make life better for both of you! 🐾
