Heat Stress in Dairy Cows 🐄☀️

With the warm weather sticking around this week, it is important to keep an eye on your herd.

Cows can experience heat stress in temperatures above 22°C. High-producing dairy cows are especially vulnerable to heat stress, which can quickly impact milk yield, fertility and health.

Signs to watch for:
• Panting and lethargy
• Reduced feed intake and rumination
• Increased standing times
• Drop in milk yield or conception rates

How to help:
✅ Plenty of clean water
✅ Shade and good ventilation
✅ Fans/sprinklers where possible
✅ Avoid handling in peak heat
✅ Keep feed fresh and regularly pushed up

Please give us a call on 01373 451115 if you have any concerns, or have any additional questions regarding heat stress.

If you missed yesterday’s calf rearers meeting, you missed a good one! 🐮

Led by vets George and Emily alongside Boehringer Ingelheim, the afternoon was packed with practical discussion, honest conversation and a really insightful farm walk looking at how Max, Hannah and Alex rear their batches of calves.

We covered everything from shed design and ventilation to vaccination protocols, feeding systems, and calf health management - with plenty of ideas and experiences shared throughout.

A big thank you to Becca from Boehringer Ingelheim for providing invaluable technical knowledge and contributing so much to the discussions.

These meetings are a fantastic opportunity to pick up new ideas, ask questions, and see what’s working well on other farms - and yesterday was no exception.

Huge thanks again to Max, Hannah and Alex for hosting and being so open about their system, and to Hartley Farm Shop and Kitchen for the delicious buffet lunch.

This week we are proud to be supporting Mental Health Awareness Week 💚

This year’s theme is ACTION.

Now is the right time to take action - for yourself, for someone else, and for all of us.

In farming, small actions can make a big difference. Checking in on a friend/colleague, taking time to rest, or simply starting a conversation could help more than you realise.

Head to https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/ to find out more.
