I turn my back 1 minute...

So, as you all know, I have been hand rearing a baby chick and it's doing so well already.
Rio came down to see what was going on.
Anyway...

After the feed, I pop the chick back into the brooder, turn around and he has grabbed the spoon and eating the rest of the formula 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣🤣

I honestly thought I was going to lose this little one.
At just 3 weeks old, mum had stopped feeding and when I checked the nest, the chick was cold, limp and really not looking good at all.
I placed the chick in my new brooder to get warm and since then I have been doing feeds every 3 hours during the day.
Thankfully, the little one has picked up really well and is now much brighter and feeding properly again.
It is still very early days though, so I am not getting too excited just yet.
There is still another 3 to 4 weeks of hand rearing to go before it starts weaning onto seed, so we have got a long way to go yet.
For now it is plenty of warmth, plenty of feeds and hopefully the little one keeps going from strength to strength.
I think you are going to be seeing quite a lot of this little face over the next few weeks.
Who wants me to keep sharing the progress?

Nest Box Size Matters More Than People Think
Nest boxes that are too small are a serious and often overlooked problem in budgie breeding.
Budgerigars need space. Space for the hen to move comfortably, space for growing chicks, and space to prevent unnecessary pressure and injury.

Using a nest box that’s too small can lead to

• Chicks being crushed or smothered

• Splayed legs due to restricted movement

• Poor growth and development

• Increased stress on the hen

• Higher risk of nest box deaths

• Difficulty keeping the box clean and dry
A cramped box forces chicks to pile on top of each other, especially as they grow. What might look “cosy” to us can quickly become dangerous.
A proper budgie nest box should allow: • The hen to turn freely

• Chicks to spread naturally as they grow

• Adequate airflow

• Easy cleaning and inspection
Breeding should never be about cutting corners. Correct equipment is part of responsible, ethical breeding, just like diet, hygiene, and genetics.

Small nest boxes are not suitable for budgerigars, especially once chicks hatch.
Thanks for being part of this journey with me and the flock. If you enjoy the updates, a like and follow means a lot

I turned my back for TWO seconds...
And Rio had already claimed the Carlsberg.
No shame. No regrets. Just pure chaos.
Honestly, I can’t leave him alone for a minute.

I think I may have gone a little bit overboard with the Bengalese...

They’ve had a proper cage upgrade and I’m so pleased with how it’s turned out.
They’ve now got a much bigger space, lots of natural twisted hazel branches to hop around on, some eucalyptus off cuts and a few rose branches from the garden too. I removed every thorn from the rose branches before putting them in.
I wanted to make it feel a bit more natural for them rather than just filling the cage with ordinary straight perches, and they were straight over investigating everything.
I only recently started keeping Bengalese and I can already tell this is going to become another obsession.
Now I want opinions because I’m tempted to add even more!

I could sit here for ages watching these.
It's now giving me second thoughts about keeping budgies and converting to finches 🤣
Maybe one day, but not quite yet.

Someone’s looking very pleased with himself today…
Rio has been happily munching away on his dried banana, while his rosette arrived in the post yesterday and is now sitting proudly on his cage.
He won 1st place for Best Parrotlike in the class last Sunday, and I’m so proud of him.
Of course, Rio couldn’t care less about the rosette. The dried banana is clearly the real prize in his eyes.
