We’d like to introduce you to one of our most recent members to join the team here at Frome Equine. Tegan Burnard has joined us in the role of Vet Tech so you will meet her out and about with the vets as well as in the office.

She has always grown up with horses and dogs and was a keen member of Wylye Valley Pony Club when she was younger. Her love for eventing and keen interest in the Veterinary industry led her to study a BSc (hons) in Veterinary Physiotherapy at Harper Adams University and she now runs her own business alongside her work at Frome Equine.

Whenever she has a spare moment, you will find her at the gym training for her next half marathon, walking one of her 3 dogs or baking some delicious bread!

We know what it’s like, Dinky is the perfect pony but your child has grown a half a foot over the Summer as well as in confidence and ambition- and now you’re on the look out for your child’s new best friend!

Good news- we have partnered with the Pony Club to be able to offer all members a 5 Stage vetting at the huge discount of £350! Make sure that Dobbin has a clean bill of health and is going to be safe for your dearly beloved before both of you fall too much in love with him!

Please get in touch if you would like any more information.

With outbreaks of Equine Flu in our area we are getting a lot of concerned owners asking questions about how their horse can catch the virus. Can it be spread by their groom? Is their unvaccinated horse at risk?

Hopefully this helps explain how the virus is spread and how to protect your horse.

1. Direct contact- as it says, directly touching another horse, typically nose to nose. Avoid!

2. Indirect contact- the virus can live up to 3 days in the environment so we can spread it ourselves, and so will shared equipment and water sources. Be vigilant with biosecurity, disinfect where needed and use your own stuff!

3. Airborne droplets- when horses cough or sneeze they release virus particles in an aerosol which then travels in the air. Horses in close proximity or sharing an air space are at risk of infection. It is even thought to travel up to 5km on the wind in the right conditions!
If your horse is on a yard or going to events with other horses they are at risk, and vaccination within the last 6 months is recommended to reduce the severity and risk of disease.

Please get in touch if you have any concerns or wish to discuss equine flu with us.

We all know it’s hot, and we’ve talked about how to keep your horse cool but do you know the signs of heatstroke to look out for?

Young, old, overweight, hairy and horses with equine asthma are at higher risk during these extreme temperatures.

Untreated heatstroke can be fatal as high internal temperatures and dehydration can cause organ failure and collapse. Quick treatment can make all the difference.

Be concerned if your horse shows these signs:
🌡️profuse sweating
🌡️rapid heavy breathing
🌡️temperature >39.5C
🌡️very lethargic and dull
🌡️loss of appetite
🌡️weakness and staggering
🌡️panicky/manic
🌡️muscle tremors
🌡️collapse

If you suspect HEATSTROKE then act promptly
💦move to shade
💦hose continuously with water, especially large muscle groups
💦 stand in a breeze or by a fan if possible
💦offer half a bucket of cold water every 30 minutes

If there is no improvement in 20-30 minutes then call a vet (or immediately if they are very weak or collapsed)! They may require intravenous fluids, anti-inflammatories and electrolytes.

Stay safe this week and keep cool! 😎

No excuses! It’s so easy to body condition score your horse, and all you need is your hand and eyes so you can do it at any time!

It is also really useful for those body types which don’t carry much weight over the ribs but are cresty with an apple bottom!

Here we describe the perfect score (3) but we advise you look up the scoring system for more detail if needed- and combine this with your weigh taping to keep a close eye on your horses weight this Spring.

05/03/2026

Time to start keeping track of your horses weight! The grass is growing and now is a good time to start recording their weigh to check they aren’t gaining too much, especially if they are already overweight or laminitic.

Here’s a reminder from Pippa, one of our vets, on how this quick and easy technique is carried out. The main aim is to be consistent with your technique and try and do it regularly- for example every fortnight or monthly

It is best combined with body conditioning scoring which we will show you next!
