🎉Huge congratulations to Jodie and Bex, who loved presenting at the European Society of Veterinary Oncology Congress 🎉

Their talk explored a challenging case of acute undifferentiated leukaemia and highlighted how oncology nursing is so much more than treatment delivery. It’s about spotting subtle changes, supporting owners through tough decisions, and keeping quality of life at the centre.

They also showcased how tools such as quality of life scales (HHHHHMM and Lap of Love) can help guide both clinical judgement and families at home.

A proud moment for our oncology nursing team who always go above and beyond for every animal they care for.

And that's a wrap on VNAM 2026! 🎉

As we conclude our celebrations of our incredible veterinary nurses, we want to take a moment to recognise the outstanding knowledge, skill, and dedication they bring to the profession every single day.

At Northwest Veterinary Specialists, our nurses are not only exceptionally talented, but are also passionate educators too. From delivering tailored Lunch & Learn sessions and creating educational videos, to authoring book chapters, hosting client evenings, and speaking at conferences, they continually share their expertise to help advance veterinary nursing and patient care.

We're constantly inspired by what they achieve, and following the success of last year's two-day multidisciplinary CPD event, our nursing team is back with something even bigger and better!

🌟 Meet Soft Tissue Specialist Ines Gordo! In this Q&A, she shares a major milestone in her surgical career. 🌟

Before joining NWVS, Ines completed a 12‑month Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) — an advanced post‑residency programme offered at only a handful of universities in the United States and not yet available in Europe.

👩‍⚕️ What did your fellowship involve?
• Intensive training within a high‑volume general surgery service, alongside a dedicated MIS caseload of more than 60 laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures.
• I also contributed research on alternative thoracic approaches and working space for feline thoracoscopy, presenting findings at international congresses.

🔍 What key areas did you develop?
• Advanced MIS techniques, including complex intracorporeal suturing
• Imaging‑guided procedures and interventional radiology exposure
• Greater confidence in case selection and perioperative decision‑making
• Research experience in emerging MIS approaches

🔥 What made the experience exceptional?
• A diverse and challenging caseload that accelerated learning
• Daily opportunities to refine MIS skills in a supportive academic environment
• And of course — the Florida sunshine was a welcome bonus

🐢 Most memorable case?
• Dystocia in a tortoise tops the list
• Also several rare thoracoscopic procedures, including persistence of the right aortic arch (PRAA) and MIS management of chylothorax.

Ines describes the fellowship as transformative, and she’s excited to bring this expertise to Northwest Veterinary Specialists — expanding MIS options and improving outcomes for the patients in her care.

Check out our website to understand more about MIS and what procedures can be performed using this technique https://www.nwspecialists.com/services/minimally-invasive-procedures/

🎉Congratulations Serena Monti 🎉

We are incredibly proud of Serena Monti, Resident in Small Animal Surgery, who has been awarded the Peter Holt Award for the best clinical abstract by the Association of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgeons (AVSTS).

Serena's paper “Near‑infrared fluorescence‑guided minimally invasive surgery for iliosacral lymph node removal in 18 dogs (2023–2025)”, highlights her retrospective study on laparoscopic removal of iliosacral lymph nodes using near‑infrared fluorescence (NIRF) with indocyanine green (ICG) guidance.

Serena’s work demonstrates how intraoperative fluorescence can significantly improve the precision of lymph node localisation, supporting more accurate staging of neoplasms in dogs. A remarkable achievement and a meaningful contribution to advancing veterinary surgical practice.

Please join us in congratulating Serena on this fantastic achievement🌟
