Now we are in September, the Care about Cushings scheme is up and running again! This scheme provides testing vouchers for the diagnosis and monitoring of PPID (AKA Cushings)🐴
PPID is a degenerative endocrine disease, primarily affecting horses and ponies over the age of 15, and can cause a multitude of symptoms, including:
- A long, curly coat
- Delayed or abnormal shedding of hair
- Laminitis (PPID massively increases the risk of laminitis)
- Increased drinking and urination
- Muscle wastage or weight loss
- Persistent or slow-healing infections (e.g. non-healing wounds, recurrent high worm burdens, recurrent abscesses)
PPID is diagnosed and monitored by measuring ACTH levels in the blood. Subsidised testing is available in September, October, March and April (sample and visit fees still apply) in line with the natural seasonal increase in levels💉
Treatment of PPID is lifelong but simple, and involves daily dosing of Pergolide (common trade name Prascend). A repeat blood test is required 6 weeks after starting treatment to ensure your horse is on the correct dose of medication (this is also subsidised by the scheme)💊
If you would like to book your horse or pony in for testing, or have any questions, please contact the office on 01928 787500 and we would be happy to chat!☎️
