💤🐾 HOW MUCH SLEEP DOES YOUR DOG NEED🐾💤

Did you know that our dogs need a LOT more sleep than we do? 🐶

Sleep isn't being lazy — it's an important part of keeping our dogs healthy, happy and balanced. ❤️

As a general guide:

🐶 Puppies can need around 18–20 hours of sleep a day while they're growing and learning.

🐕 Adult dogs often need around 12–14 hours of sleep over a 24-hour period.

🐾 Senior dogs may need 14–18 hours or even more as their bodies get older.

But remember — every dog is an individual!🧡

Breed, age, health, lifestyle and how active your dog has been can all affect how much rest they need.

Sometimes after a busy or exciting day, your dog may need extra time to switch off and recover.

Some signs that your dog may not be getting enough rest can include:

😴 Struggling to settle
😤 Irritable or grumpy behaviour
⚡ Being overly excitable
👀 Finding it difficult to focus
🐾 Restlessness or excessive chewing

Giving your dog a quiet, comfortable place to sleep and allowing them to rest undisturbed is one of the simplest ways we can support their wellbeing.

And just like people, dogs can have different sleeping habits — so getting to know what's normal for your dog is really important.

👀🐾 UNDERSTANDING YOUR DOG'S CALMING SIGNALS🐾👀

Did you know that dogs have lots of subtle ways of telling us when they're feeling uncomfortable, unsure or overwhelmed? 🐶

Sometimes we can miss these little signals because they seem so ordinary.

Things like:

👅 Lip licking
😮‍💨 Yawning when they're not tired
👀 Looking away or turning their head
🐕 Turning their body away
👃 Sniffing when there doesn't seem to be an obvious reason
↔️ Moving away or creating space

These aren't "bad behaviours". They're ways our dogs communicate and can be their polite way of saying **"I need a little space."** 🧡

Learning to notice these signals gives us the opportunity to listen to our dogs before they become more stressed or overwhelmed.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is simply give them space, slow things down and let them choose what they're comfortable with.

🐾 The better we understand our dogs, the better we can support them.

Walking our dogs should be enjoyable for both of us, but sometimes little habits can make walks more difficult than they need to be.

Here are 5 common mistakes to look out for:

1️⃣ Pulling on the lead
Yanking or constantly pulling can create frustration. Instead, reward your dog when they walk nicely on a loose lead.

2️⃣ Using walks only for exercise
Dogs need more than physical exercise. Give them time to sniff, explore and use their minds too. 👃🧠

3️⃣ Rushing the walk
Sometimes we forget that our dogs experience the world through their noses. Slow down and let them take things in.

4️⃣ Ignoring body language
Our dogs are constantly communicating with us. Learning to recognise signs of stress, excitement or discomfort can make walks much more positive.

5️⃣ Being inconsistent with boundaries
Dogs learn through consistency. Clear, calm and predictable expectations can help them understand what we're asking.

Loose lead walking isn't about making your dog walk perfectly—it’s about building understanding, communication and a positive connection between you and your four-legged friend.

Here are 5 simple tips to help:

🐾 Reward the behaviour you want,
Praise and reward your dog when they walk nicely beside you. This helps them understand what you’re asking for.

🌳 Start somewhere quiet
Practise in a low-distraction area first, then gradually build up to busier places.

⏱️ Keep sessions short and positive
Small, successful training sessions can make a big difference.

👃 Allow time to sniff and explore
