Soaking hay helps to reduce the sugar (WSC) content and in turn reduces calories too!
Soaking may need to be an essential part of everyday management for a horse or pony prone to laminitis, PPID, EMS, obesity etc. But what facts do you need to know?

๐Ÿ“ˆ Sugar/ calorie losses are highly variable which means soaking doesnโ€™t guarantee suitability for laminitics. If the sugar/ calories are high to start with they might still be too high after soaking.
๐Ÿ“Š For those on restricted rations, itโ€™s important to include dry matter levels when you calculate how much to feed each day to ensure they get enough forage.
โ—Remember, horses and ponies should receive a minimum of 1.5% of their bodyweight in dry matter each day.
๐ŸŒŸ This is a minimum dry matter of 9kgs for a 600kg horse, 7.5kgs for a 500kg horse, 6kgs for a 400kg pony and 4.5kgs for a 300kg pony.
๐Ÿ’ง Hay usually contains around 10-15% water. An average haynet weighs approx. 6kgs when filled. Of that, roughly 0.9kg will be water, with 5.1kgs of dry matter โ€“ or actual hay.
๐Ÿ’ก Soaking hay results in a loss of dry matter. This is complex but, due to the loss of nutrients into the water your hay net will contain approx. 20% less โ€˜hayโ€™ after youโ€™ve soaked it โ€“ the 5.1kg could now be just 4.1kgs.
๐Ÿšจ So, you started off weighing out 6kgs of dry hay for your horse overnight. But after accounting for typical water content and then losing a further 20% of dry matter when soaking the hay, your horse might now only be eating 4.1kgs of forage!
