🔹Following on from the previous post.
🔹Darcy is a busy young dog. Finds it challenging to disengage from the environment.
🔹However, if we give a dog time and space and we observe them and mark and reward eye contact , often the dog will slowly disengage with the busy world and start to engage with us.
🔹Darcy does just this, she is rewarded for eye contact and she works out if she offers a Sit she gets rewarded to.
🔹Bingo!! No nagging. No constant commands. Just choosing a place with space and give her Time to engage. Bond grows. Trust grows. Learning takes place.
🔹 Great work Darcy and Day Dogstroll Doggy Daycare in SW London

🔹We have to coach our dogs whatever their age, breed or character we are at the end of the lead!😂😜
🔹An easy first stage strategy is just stand still. Say nothing. Allow them to disengage from the environment.
🔹When they start to orientate back to you and their eyes automatically start to focus on you.
🔹Say “Yes” that’s the behaviour we want to encourage and learn .
🔹Such an important skill to learn for focus, proximity and ultimately a recall.
Thank you to Day Dogstroll Doggy Daycare in SW London

Max is doing so well with his owner he is a very young adolescent Jack Russell.

Here we are using his boundary/bed to create a calm positive association with the harness and lead being fitted.
Dogs are very good at predicting routines and outcomes so just coaching calmness, focus on the bed with harness on does not automatically mean a walk and over stimulation .
Great work.

I love this game as it is so easy to do, you can do it anywhere and it is has so many positives.

1. It builds focus on you
2. It builds a sense of proximity to you.
3. It builds a dog’s concentration on you.
4. It builds problem solving skills in your dog.
5. It’s fun and another way to engage with your dog.

This is only the 2nd time I have met Pye and the first time he has ever experienced this game.

See how quickly he learns what to do. No commands. Just allowing simple science space to do the rest.

If we allow our dogs space and time to work through a problem and mark it clearly and simply the learning comes quickly.

A lovely simple game.

🔹My Doberman, like many of his breed and other breeds, has a high prey drive.

🔹It can be challenging, but it can be worked with.

🔹For me, the foundations come first — and play is a big part of that.

🔹The woods is his favourite place 😂
Pheasants, squirrels and plenty of distractions!

🔹But a simple search game can sometimes override his desire to search for 🐿️.

🔹Finding his ball and having a game of tug with me becomes more rewarding.

Small steps.
Patience.
Play. 🐾

🔹Building connection and making you worth listening to, even when the world around them is exciting.

🔹 I love using a Treat & Train or sometimes called a Manners Minder.
🔹 Excellent remote controlled treat dispenser to add to your repertoire of coaching strategies.
🔹 Here we are just having some fun , strengthening the basics of recall , send away, bed, distance control and of course building and strengthening our bond and listening skills.
🔹 Always pay to revisit simple, easy win exercises that your dog knows . It all helps to make them stronger.

🔹Absolutely chucking it down here on the South Coast so Mr P not being a huge fan of the wet stuff decided to opt for a quick brain game!
🔹Aims: To nose touch the target stick.
To engage with me.
To have fun.
To use his brain, where to orientate where to touch to get the reward.

🔹If you want to learn how to coach you and your dog then please just get in touch.

Have a good weekend

🔹 Max is a 6 months old JRT pup and has had 4 sessions with us.

🔹 Here is his very first time so close to a dog, ( My Pum) without playing with the dog etc.

🔹 Max loves dogs and so he should every occasion he has with dogs is positive.

🔹 A life skill he will learn is to disengage from a dog . To focus on his owner. Another dog does not necessarily mean playtime.

🔹So useful for visits to the beach cafe or b**r garden.

🔹So we must coach them.

🔹Fab work Max in your first time out with Pum. Note the reward comes every time Max looks and disengages from Pum that’s the behaviour we reward . He knows my dog is there but chooses to look back at Mum. Awesome. 👏🏻🐶❤️

🐾 Structured Play — More Than Just Fun!

Structured play can have so many benefits for our dogs:

🔹 Stronger bond
🔹 Greater trust
🔹 More fun and engagement
🔹 Increased focus on you
🔹 Better listening skills
🔹 Improved impulse control
…and that’s just to name a few!

Let’s take Bono, a lovely Labrador, as an example.

Bono loves nothing more than running over to greet and play with other dogs. Whilst this may seem friendly and harmless, it can create problems — for both dogs and their owners.

So rather than simply telling Bono “NO”, we are giving him something better to do.

1️⃣ Management first
We use a longline, giving Bono freedom whilst still allowing us to manage the situation. Simple and effective.

2️⃣ Arousal up, arousal down
We play a simple Red Light / Green Light game, teaching Bono that excitement can be switched on — and switched off.

🟢 GREEN LIGHT: Chase, play and bite the toy.

🔴 RED LIGHT: The game stops. Bono releases the toy and offers a behaviour, such as a sit.

He is rewarded with food and then…

🟢 GREEN LIGHT — LET’S PLAY!

And this is where the magic happens.

Bono is learning to:

🐾 Focus on his owner rather than everything else around him
🐾 Listen even when excited
🐾 Control his arousal levels
🐾 Choose to engage with his owner
🐾 Have FUN whilst learning

And most importantly, we’re using something Bono already loves to help teach him the skills we want.

Dog training doesn’t always need to be about stopping unwanted behaviour.

Sometimes it’s about finding what makes your dog tick… and using that motivation to teach them something better. ❤️

If you’d like help using structured play with your dog, just drop me a message. I’d be happy to help.

🔹One of the recent posts was highlighting Generalising a skill.

🔹Here Max a JRT puppy is doing exactly this.

🔹Taking the bed/ boundary exercise for the very first time to the village green.

🔹Traffic noise, pedestrians , smells , wind, seagulls and a hist of other factors that may have an effect on a dog doing an exercise they know but not in this environment.

🔹Max did so well. The rapid rate of reward helps a young dog to learn they are doing well.

Fab work Max.
