I want to give a quick update on Topaz’s teeth. Since taking her on last December, I noted that she was having trouble with her teeth. Particularly, she was packing food behind, in between and in front of her incisors. She had a check-up with our EDT (who is fab and did a great job with her pre-molars/molars) however, sadly she was still packing food in front and showing signs of pain and discomfort.

So, around 6 weeks ago, we had the fabulous Nurturing Nature Equine - Dr Lily Wilson MRCVS out to do an examination under sedation and to address her incisors to see if that would help. The feedback was that Topaz’s teeth were in really good shape, her premolars/molars were great and her incisors were also not too bad considering her age (26yrs old). However, there was some balancing that could be done and a hook to remove from her upper incisors. She also has one slightly wobbly upper incisor and a bit of gum disease.

Since her treatment, I’ve been cleaning Topaz’s incisors, using a soft interspace toothbrush, and a syringe with diluted mouthwash to clean out the grass and feed. However, I am really pleased to see how much she has improved, no longer packing food in front of her teeth and much less grass being packed behind and in between the incisors.

She wasn’t a huge fan of me cleaning her teeth however as things have improved she’s become more accommodating to it, but I haven’t needed to do it as often either.

If your horse is struggling with packing food or discomfort with their teeth, particularly incisors, I highly recommend getting Lily out, or another dentist in your area who can balance incisors. It’s been a game changer for us x

Part 2 - This is how we start our Equine Touch sessions…

Palpation, or in Equine Touch, we call it ‘Branding’ the horse, because importantly our session with the horse starts from palpation.

Branding is the opportunity for us to show the horse our intention and integrity towards them, bringing their awareness to the bodyworker and new sensations in their body, opening the door for change.

It is an energy exchange between you and the horse.

It is the Equine Touch brand of A.I.I. (Awareness (Acuracy), Integrity, Intent).

Before we can do anything with the horse, including truly understanding the signals and reactions from the horse, we must do this step first.

As you can see from the video, this gorgeous mare is already benefiting from the session just in the palpation stage.

When we ‘brand’ the horse, we are using gentle and long sweeping strokes, feeling the tone of the skin and fascia beneath our hands. We can observe a range of sensations from heat, swelling, suppleness or tightness, weakness and adhesion, as well as energtic feedback and pain responses or relaxation through stimulation of the energy meridian lines and relaxation of the nervous system, plus much more.

You can learn The Equine Touch at one of our courses across the UK and Ireland, Europe and worldwide. I teach in Kent, South East England. Courses are open to horse owners and professionals.

Listen along with me as I work with a beautiful Lusitano mare, helping to release her tension and encourage relaxation with The Equine Touch bodywork x

04/06/2026

Working with a sensitive Lusitano mare who was diagnosed by their vet with radiculopathy in her cervical spine (nerve compression).

She also has been struggling with metabolic issues, which I believe has been agrevated by pain and environmental issues - it is a whole body issue.

With a new yard and continued support through bodywork and nutrition, she is making fantastic progress now, so much so that their vet said it made his year to see how she is improving, on a recent check-up.

This mare can be tricky to work with but The Equine Touch teaches to closely observe the horse’s communication signals, never to force the bodywork or to create pain from the movements. We build trust and confidence with the horse, creating a calm and safe space for them to relax and release. Our unique move becomes recognisable by the horse, associating this with a positive and pleasant experience, letting their guard down (so to speak) and reaping more longer lasting benefits from the sessions. It is why our modality is so successful with sensitive and reactive horses.

Here I am working to release the superficial neck muscles, Omnotransversarius and Brachiocephalicus plus the superficial fascia to promote relaxation and create more space within the superficial & connecting deep layers of soft tissue for improved mobility and less pressure upon the nerves and circulatory system in the area.

It is important to note that the whole body is addressed during an Equine Touch session to assist with complete balance and to encourage negative habitual patterns, which are held through compensation, to ease and improve.

The Equine Touch is a gentle, non-invasive and non-diagnostic technique that works with the horse, without force to bring new awareness to the body and mind, thus improving whole body wellness both physically and emotionally x
