I want to give a quick update on Topaz’s teeth. Since taking her on last December, I noted that she was having trouble with her teeth. Particularly, she was packing food behind, in between and in front of her incisors. She had a check-up with our EDT (who is fab and did a great job with her pre-molars/molars) however, sadly she was still packing food in front and showing signs of pain and discomfort.
So, around 6 weeks ago, we had the fabulous Nurturing Nature Equine - Dr Lily Wilson MRCVS out to do an examination under sedation and to address her incisors to see if that would help. The feedback was that Topaz’s teeth were in really good shape, her premolars/molars were great and her incisors were also not too bad considering her age (26yrs old). However, there was some balancing that could be done and a hook to remove from her upper incisors. She also has one slightly wobbly upper incisor and a bit of gum disease.
Since her treatment, I’ve been cleaning Topaz’s incisors, using a soft interspace toothbrush, and a syringe with diluted mouthwash to clean out the grass and feed. However, I am really pleased to see how much she has improved, no longer packing food in front of her teeth and much less grass being packed behind and in between the incisors.
She wasn’t a huge fan of me cleaning her teeth however as things have improved she’s become more accommodating to it, but I haven’t needed to do it as often either.
If your horse is struggling with packing food or discomfort with their teeth, particularly incisors, I highly recommend getting Lily out, or another dentist in your area who can balance incisors. It’s been a game changer for us x
