Atypical Myopathy is a potentially fatal disease in horses.

Cases are most commonly seen during the autumn and spring months, particularly following wet, windy weather conditions.

As we are experiencing extremely windy conditions at present it is important that horse owners are aware of the signs.

Sycamore seeds and seedlings are the main cause of Atypical Myopathy.
Disease is caused through eating toxins found in the seeds (which have a helicopter like appearance) and seedlings/young shrubs. These toxins affect normal energy production within muscle cells.

As a result, horses develop severe and widespread muscle damage, particularly affecting muscles responsible for movement, breathing, and maintaining posture.

Clinical signs include:

โ€ข Sudden weakness or reluctance to move
โ€ข Muscle stiffness or trembling
โ€ข Sweating/colic like symptoms
โ€ข Depression and lethargy
โ€ข Difficulty standing or recumbency
โ€ข Dark red or brown urine (myoglobinuria)
โ€ข Increased heart rate and respiratory effort

The disease can progress rapidly and should always be considered a veterinary emergency.

Diagnosis is based on a combination of:
โ€ข Clinical signs and grazing history
โ€ข Identification of sycamore trees, seeds, or seedlings in or around the pasture
โ€ข Blood tests showing markedly elevated muscle enzymes (such as CK and AST)
โ€ข Urinalysis demonstrating myoglobinuria (bloody urine)

๐‘๐ž๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ค:
โ€ข Identify sycamore trees in and around grazing areas
โ€ข Fence off areas where seeds or seedlings accumulate
โ€ข Provide adequate additional hay/haylage to reduce risk of foraging/ingestion.
โ€ข Rake/remove seeds if found in field.
โ€ข Regularly monitor/remove sycamore seedlings in spring and seeds in autumn
โ€ข Ensure clean water sources are available.

Testing sycamore seeds/seedlings for hypoglycin A is available and can help to aid understanding of the risks but a negative result does not necessarily guarantee that your field is safe.

If you suspect Atypical Myopathy, contact your vet immediately.

Early recognition and aggressive supportive treatment offer the best chance of survival, although the condition remains associated with a high mortality rate.

Colic is a general term used to describe pain in the horseโ€™s abdomen and can range from painful to life-threatening.
Horses can respond differently, and their behaviour may not always reflect how much pain they are in.
This can vary from appearing quieter than normal, showing only subtle signs, to clear indications that thereโ€™s a problem.
Colic can deteriorate quickly therefore it should be treated as an emergency.

๐‘๐„๐€๐‚๐“ to reduce risk , recognise early signs and be prepared when making decisions.

Recognising the signs of colic early and contacting your vet quickly is vital to increase your horseโ€™s chance of recovery, and in critical cases where further treatment or surgery isnโ€™t an option, to prevent any unnecessary suffering.

If you notice any signs of distress or changes in your horseโ€™s behaviour, think ๐‘๐„๐€๐‚๐“ and immediately contact your vet for advice .

Know the normal for your horse:
-the consistency and number of droppings per day,
-their normal behaviour and
-their eating and drinking habits.

Contact your vet straight away -they can advise you on further steps.
If your vet isnโ€™t familiar with your yard, you can share a what3words or live location with them.
Make sure the vet has a contact number they can reach you on.

Horses in pain may display uncharacteristic behaviours and may not be aware of their surroundings, including you. Make sure youโ€™re safe and donโ€™t proceed with anything if itโ€™ll put you at risk; wait for your vet to arrive to support you.

- Allow your horse to lie down or roll if they wish to; this wonโ€™t make colic worse.
- Try to make the area as safe as possible. This could be a field, arena, stable or shelter.
- Remove any objects your horse could injure themselves on including water buckets, hay nets or equipment.
- Your horse may be more comfortable gently walking. It can be safer to keep your horse on a lunge line. Make sure to wear a riding hat, gloves and appropriate footwear.
- Donโ€™t force your horse to walk if theyโ€™re reluctant and donโ€™t walk for more than 30 minutes unless your vet has advised you to do so. Think of us if we suffer gut pain; if itโ€™s trapped wind, it can be helpful to move. If itโ€™s appendicitis, it would be very painful to try and walk.
โ€ข Critical colic is time sensitive.
โ€ข Think over your plan so youโ€™re prepared to make quick and informed decisions if needed.
โ€ข Consider your finances, insurance if you have it, and how youโ€™ll transport your horse if needed.
โ€ข Stay calm and continue to monitor your horse so you can inform your vet when they arrive.

Wounds are common occurrences in equine patients. Complications that can develop during wound healing are numerous including the development of exuberant granulation tissue, commonly known as โ€œproud flesh.โ€ Early recognition and appropriate treatment are crucial for complete wound healing and optimal cosmetic and functional outcomes.

Many thanks to our client who has allowed us to share the pictures of a 15 month healing journey from when we were first called to assess a hock that had developed a large amount of proud flesh and also for her tremendous patience and co operation in managing to give a great end result!

It is not unusual for wound healing to be delayed by the development of large fleshy outgrowths known as proud flesh or more properly described as exuberant granulation tissue. Once proud flesh has developed a wound is unable to heal as effectively in the normal manner and frequently special treatments, including minor surgical procedures are required to remove the excess tissue.

If the healing process is impaired, the delicate balance between the various processes can be upset. If contraction and the migration of skin surface cells are inhibited then the wound may get bigger because granulation tissue is the only active process happening. This usually results in a bulging ,knobbly mass of tissue, which usually looks pink and shiny. It may also have a yellowing tinge and may bleed easily if knocked. Sometimes the tissue can protrude out of the wound and look like a pink cauliflower.

There are many reasons why a wound doesnโ€™t heal as expected, which can include infection, foreign bodies, dead tissues or movement within the wound site, chemical applications and poor blood supply to the wound. All of these factors can encourage exuberant granulation tissue and inhibit the spread of skin cells across the surface of the wound. Infection and excessive movement are the most likely reasons why horse wounds develop proud flesh.

Appropriate veterinary advice is required to decide on the best treatment options. Sometimes thorough wound cleaning and topical creams may resolve minor amounts of proud flesh, along with firm bandaging to reduce movement and help wound healing. Laser therapy can help and occasional caustic substances can be recommended.

A wound with an excess of granulation tissue is often most effectively managed surgically. Usually, this involves cutting back any excessive tissue. While this is invariably a very bloody business, it is usually painless because granulation tissue has minimal nerves or nerve endings.

The case in the pictures was managed by cutting back excessive tissue and bandaging alongside regular monitoring to achieve healing.

Thank you Jess , Laura and Nadine for everything you do!!

Life in practice can be challenging, and receptionists, like every member of the veterinary team, have a demanding role.

Often they are the first point of contact for clients experiencing a wide range of emotions, all while handling multiple responsibilities - answering calls, booking appointments, managing ongoing tasksโ€ฆ and everything in between! (including dealing with Liz and Callum every day !!)

The BVRA introduced Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Day (VRAD) in 2019 to highlight the vital role of veterinary receptionists, and we are proud to celebrate this special day on October 1st and want to say a huge thank you to our amazing team of receptionists for all that they do!!
