🏡 Sometimes the right boarding decision is not to board…

We recently had the pleasure of getting to know gorgeous young Jackie the Jack Russell (amazing name, yes?!)💕🐶

Jackie was originally due to come and stay with us at Happy Dog HQ, but as we worked through our familiarisation process, it became clear that her exuberant puppy energy and the older, quieter energy of our resident boarding dog, Nova, were probably not going to be a match made in heaven! 😅🐾

And that is exactly why familiarisation matters.

Before confirming any boarding arrangement, we take time to make sure that every dog involved is comfortable and happy — both our guest and Nova. Often, that process confirms a brilliant match; occasionally, it tells us a different arrangement would be better.

For Jackie, the answer was simple: we pivoted to caring for her in her own home instead 🏡💛

And what fun we had! Her sit included days out and adventures, trips to the pet shop (thank you PK's Pet Supplies) 🦴, National Trust visits 🌳 and stops at some lovely local cafés ☕️. Jackie brought all the enthusiasm and entertainment you would expect from a young pup, while we also made sure there was plenty of downtime for naps, rest and that all-important growing 💤🐶

It turned out to be a fantastic arrangement for everyone — Jackie could enjoy her holiday entirely on her own terms, while Nova retained the calm home environment that suits her stage of life.

It is also a useful reminder when choosing a boarding provider. Whether you use Happy Dog Holiday Care or someone else, we would always encourage you to ask about their familiarisation and trial process 💬. A good boarding match should never simply be assumed; taking the time to establish that dogs are genuinely comfortable together is an important part of responsible, professional care 🐾.

🐾 More than boarding and sitting… pet care for those “I don't suppose you could…?” moments

Alongside our boarding and sitting services, we also offer pop-in visits, occasional walkies and all manner of tailored ad hoc support, for when life throws up something a little different 😊.

Recently we had the pleasure of helping gorgeous Pixie with her annual family photoshoot 📸. Pixie had her very own dedicated Happy Dog PA for the occasion, before heading off with us for a lovely walk while her human family continued with their photos. She tends to pose perfectly first time you see, whereas her humans needed a little longer 😉🐶✨

We also whisked Fern and Albi away for a few hours while their human siblings enjoyed a very exciting birthday party at home — complete with some rather wild animal visitors! 🐍🦎🎉

We’re fairly sure Fern and Albi would have been more than happy to join in, but their humans rather wisely decided that an afternoon of alternative fun, games and walkies with us might be the calmer option 😂🐾

Sometimes pet care is not about a holiday or a regular booking, but about having someone trusted who can step in and make life easier when needed.

We need to talk about Lennie ... 💙💙💙

This little poppet was just the scrummiest companion on his recent holiday 🥰.

Having just celebrated his 1st birthday, 'Little Len Len's' puppy-ish energy was so much fun, but he also knew how to switch off and be such a good boy around the house - a truly delightful pup!

He enjoyed his daily walks when the temperatures were cool enough, playtime with his huge selection of toys, and lots of frozen treats to keep cool 😎. Our hearts just melted when, on the final day, Holly was gifted a rock from the garden by him 🥹😂.

Mr Bruce enjoys the quiet life 💜. As a senior gentleman with a few extra needs, he requires quality care, a bespoke schedule with attention to the details, a slower pace and a calm environment. Fortunately for Mr B, that's exactly what we specialise in 😎.

Just before he came to board with us, Bruce had been a bit poorly. This, combined with the heatwave, meant we prepared extra thoroughly and carefully 🙂.

After a few days of settling in, chilling in the aircon, getting used to his surroundings and lots of one-to-one time, we were really pleased to see Bruce's appetite return, his tummy settle and his enthusiam for walkies come back with force 🥰!

His character burst through and he returned to his opinionated self 😂, especially when we turned back on walks before resident boarding dog Nova - he absolutely did not understand why he had to go home early (he just can't walk quite as far as her, but he didn't get the memo!)

Bruce has been cared for by Happy Dog Holiday Care for many years now 💛 and we were thrilled to be able to help this gorgeous boy feel better again and have a fun holiday ☀️!

🎄✨ Have you thought about your winter plans yet? 🐾

We have and it involves being beautifully cold and going for walkies at any time of the day! ❄️🤗😉

It may still feel a little early to think about the last months of the year, let alone Christmas (!)… but our diary is now open for November and December; we still have a little availability from early to mid-October too 🙂.

Reminiscing about cooler times! Pre-heatwave adventures (remember those days?!) 😆🐾

To hopefully make you feel a little cooler 🙃, we’re taking a look back at our pups from recent weeks, who we spent glorious time with when temperatures were in the teens and low twenties!

We had the pleasure of spending time with these familiar faces, across pop-in visits, walkies and boarding stays; as always, one household at a time and tailored 100% to each dog’s individual needs and personality 😊

🎾 Duke brought lots of fun to his time with us, with games galore (there really is no choice, you WILL throw that ball 😂) and sofa cuddles 💕

🐶 Neo continued to enjoy his much-loved lane walkies, taking in all the sniffs and sights at his own happy pace 💙

🏡Charlie and Savannah had a very exciting role as the first to road test our new boarding set-up. We were so pleased to welcome this very special pair and see them settle in so beautifully ✨

🚶‍♀️Fern has enjoyed a number of walkies, which we are now adjusting every time to make sure we beat the heat and keep those sniffy strolls safe and comfortable ☀️

We have so much fun coming up too, here’s to a superb summer of happy adventures (with slightly earlier starts for now!) 😊

🌿 The highest standard of pet care means being able to respond when things do not go completely to plan… 🐾

Most of the time, we’re able to post about entirely lovely sits, pop-in visits and boarding holidays. When there is a challenge though, we feel it’s important to communicate that too 👍.

Good pet care involves love, appropriate boundaries, fulfilment, games, cuddles, rest and walkies🙂. First class and professional pet care is all of this, plus the ability to respond calmly, competently and collaboratively when there is a setback or unexpected issue.

We are sharing this following a recent sit with much-loved regular, Gracie 🐶💕.

During our time together, Gracie developed a limp and was noticeably uncomfortable on one of her paws. 🐾 Although there was no obvious cause, after some rest, things weren’t improving and it was clear she needed to be checked by a vet. 😕.

Now, Gracie is lucky to have some of the most dedicated pawrents out there 💛💜. With close communication and their full support, we made arrangements and took Gracie to an appointment - she was a very brave girl!

She was prescribed medication and we followed the vet’s advice for the remainder of our stay. She later underwent a scan, which reassuringly revealed nothing obvious or serious. The conclusion was a soft tissue injury.

As professionals and devoted animal lovers, we find it upsetting when something like this happens while a pet is in our care 😞. We naturally replay the day to try and pinpoint what occurred and whether there was anything we could have done differently 🤔. In this case, we don’t know exactly what caused the injury - perhaps a twist while playing? An awkward landing from the sofa or a misstep out on a walk? While we place your pets’ welfare at the centre of every decision and do all we can to minimise risk, sometimes these things can still happen.

Situations like this are a reminder that choosing pet care is not only about the happy walkies, cuddles and companionship. It is also about knowing that the person caring for your pets — and your home too, in the case of sitting 🏡 — can respond appropriately if something unexpected arises.

After medication, rest and a gentle return to exercise, we were so pleased to hear that Gracie is now back to her full, happy Labrador self 💕 We cannot wait to care for her again in the autumn 🥰🍂

☀️ We all know it's hot, you don't need ANOTHER social media post to tell you, right? It's so extreme out there right now though, we feel the message can't be reinforced enough ...

As we returned to the aircon before 7am after super early morning walks, it was already 22 degrees. With the residual heat built up from such a long period of extreme heat, it feels hotter than that 🥵.

Our resident boarding dog, Nova, went back to bed. Smart girl. I'd also like to go back to bed after many consecutive early rises and late nights reminiscent of my 20s (dog walks replacing nightclubs 😉).

Today was going to be the day to update the page with all the fab pups we've looked after in June so far, but my brain is struggling so you'll have to wait a little longer 🥴😂.

Keep it simple for the rest of this week. Stay home if you can, keep cool, look after those precious pets 😎 🐕🐶💛💜

Happy Dog Holiday Care’s Hot Weather Promise 🥵

With high temperatures on the way, your dog’s welfare is our number one priority 🐶☝️

We’ll be switching to super‑early (best time of day! 🌅) and late‑evening walkies, keeping dogs indoors during the hottest hours, and making sure the paddling pool is topped up 💦

We encourage everyone to do the same. If you use another dog care service (firstly… why? 😉), make sure you know what heat‑safety measures they have in place. Adjusting routines might be inconvenient, but business‑as‑usual simply isn’t safe in this weather 🐶💜💛
