Sorry it's been a while! As always, we have been busy busy busy!!!
Now, this guy is Kermet, the fully aquatic african clawed frog. He lives with his suprise friend meep the Kuhli loach.
Now we got these guys back in June, but it took a while to get them set up in their tank, and we had some ups and downs getting the water to the right levels as there wasn't time to cycle a tank before they arrived.
Theirs is a bit of a sad story, I had a message from someone I met a few weeks earlier that a friend of hers had passed away and left a frog. Friends and housemates had fed him and kept him going, but they were due to move, and no one could take froggy with them. So we stepped in and came to collect him from about an hour away. The frog was being kept in a tank that he had long since outgrown and a type that really is no longer recommended, a picture frame style. While catching him, we noticed a very fast fish darting around. After catching them both, we brought them back. After testing the water they came in, I realised how urgent it was to get them in a clean tank. All of the water test levels were dangerously high, and they needed to be moved ASAP.
After a few months, we finally have it all sorted bar a little on and off algae.
We love these guys and really enjoy caring for them, especially when froggy sings, volume up on the video to hear him!
Due to being aquatic, they will not come to events with us but will stay with us in safety for the rest of their lives.
African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) Normally, they should be kept in a species only tank as they eat anything that they can fit in their mouths, but these two seem to have a great bond and co habitat nicely!. They can live up to 20 - 30 years! They don't have a tongue, and you can identify them by the 3 back nails on each of their back feet!
kuhli loach are an eel like fish who are peaceful and super speedy. They are a small and beautiful bottom feeder that help to keep the tank clean. They can live up to around 12 years.
Cool, aren't they?!
